Has Columbia REALLY made 29 verbal commitments to 2019 and 2020 high schoolers?

Is that number too high or too low?

Their classifications of recruits can be confusing. Those are offers and not commitments. I am sure they are accurate to a point but also leave out some and include others where the offer may no longer be available.

More than twice as many offers as any other Ivy, for some reason.

Well, that’s a function of who wants the info out there. Harvard has gone from publicizing offers (presumably in an effort to create buzz) in Amaker’s early years to basically keeping them as quiet as possible (presumably because they don’t want everyone in the world knowing who they are pursuing).
How many offers are listed on verbal commits likely has no correlation to how many have been made.

Amaker has traditionally had his feelers out on many recruits - they just aren't all publicized. So you get into situations like Matt Howard, who had or didn't have a Harvard offer depending on who you asked.
Nothing to see here. Just Engles doing his job.

I have a feeling Steve Donahue has started playing his cards closer to the vest as well.

FWIW, a coach on the previous staff once told me that typically one brings in about 20% of the recruits/offers a school makes.

And not only is Engles just doing his job, he's doing his job well. I can't remember a string of Columbia recruits being rated this highly...Faulds (3.5*), Nweke (3*) and Ellis (2.3*).
I know the number of stars awarded bares no direct relationship to career performance. And there's always the issue of Engles' in-game coaching. Nevertheless, on average, I have to believe that higher rated recruits will perform better over time.
My point being that Engles appears to be the best recruiting coach we've had in a very long time, if the early returns are to be believed.

Why is Bibbs not playing? He was a very highly ranked recruit with other D1 offers. In the early part of the season he looked like a real player n

We have a ton of good guards...Smith, Adlesh, Castlin, Stefinini and Hickman. I'm sure Bibbs will play lots of minutes next year.
I see Columbia has interest in Peter Barba's brother, Andy.
On that note, I noticed that earlier in the year, Texas forward Dylan Osetkowski was appearing on the NBA mock drafts as a late 2nd round pick. He seems to have recently fallen off the draft boards. I wish we could have landed him.

I don't know where you're getting Nweke as a 3-star, but I assume it's Verbal Commits. Click on the link to the ESPN 3-star rating. It's a two star. He's a project, but definitely worth the gamble. I just wouldn't expect him to be a rotation guy as a freshman.
Ellis can play. I think he's a better prospect than both Nweke (for sure) and even Faulds.
Kyle was extremely underrated as a recruiter.

I do agree with you about Maka Ellis--very good prospect who should make a big impact at Columbia. I also like Ike Nweke, but expect more initially from Ellis. In the past, the coaching staff brought in outstanding late recruits such as Luke Petrasek and Lukas Meisner. Hopefully, that will happen again, because a two-man class doesn't make sense to me for many reasons.

As I mentioned on the other thread, 2018 turned out to be a TERRIBLE class for Ivies to pick from. If you got anything out of this class that can help you as a freshman, be glad...

Check for yourself. It's already been posted on this thread, in the very first post, in fact.
And I never said he'd be in the rotation as a freshman. What I said was, "My point being that Engles appears to be the best recruiting coach we've had in a very long time, if the early returns are to be believed."
If you don't agree, take it up with VC.

That's what he means. Check for yourself and click on the link from Verbal Commits, and then the link for ESPN. He's listed by ESPN as a 2-Star, and has no rating from the other two sources (Scout, Rivals). It's a mistake by Verbal Commits.

One positive for Nweke is he played AAU ball for Team Melo and was second in rebounding, ahead of bigger guys going to Mississippi and Washington.

Nweke was also chosen MVP of his prep title game, which also included guys committed to St. Joes, GW and Mt. St. Mary's:

Ellis is the shooter, Nweke the rebounder--a better version of Jeff Coby?

I was speaking to my 15 year old son about this. He said that players sometimes get downgraded. For example, Nweke might have received 3 stars from ESPN as a 6'6 sophomore PF, in anticipation that he would grow two more inches to eventually become a 6'8 senior.
When that didn't happen, ESPN might have downgraded him to 2 stars, and Verbal Commits never updated their rating on him. Just an idea, but it seems plausible.
