to Harvard and Penn:

IF PENN WINS TONIGHT
Harvard will take first place by beating Penn on Saturday, even if it loses to Princeton, because it will have the head-to-head tiebreaker. If Harvard wins tonight, it will be alone in first if it beats Penn.

IF PENN LOSES TONIGHT
If Princeton wins tonight, Harvard will still take first place by beating Penn on Saturday, because it will have the head-to-head tiebreaker. If Harvard wins tonight, it will be alone in first if it beats Penn.

Glad this wasn’t another post about the Ivy Tourney!!!

While tonight’s games are meaningless for who will lead the Ivy at the end of the weekend (though technically, I think you left out if Harvard wins tonight, Penn loses and then Penn wins Saturday... Penn would be at the mercy of tiebreakers that wouldn’t matter if it had just won the night before), they are meaningful for how many wins you’ll need next weekend to clinch a title and/or 1-seed.

Yeah, this is why Penn should be rooting for the Cs this weekend.

Penn can only tie H in the head to head tiebreaker, at best. So the next tiebreaker is head to head vs Ivy teams, starting with the top seed and working one's way down the standings.

H has already lost to Columbia. So if Penn can beat Harvard on Saturday night, it will win that 2nd tiebreaker provided its 2nd loss is against a team that ends up lower in the IL standings than Columbia.

So we basically want to see Brown and Yale lose as much as possible between now and the end of the year, and want to see Columbia finish as high as possible.

Or... We want Penn to win their final 4 games...

Absolutely. Keep as much of one's fate in one's own hands as possible.

I don't get the meaningless aspect, unless one believes that it makes no difference if we finish first or second. If we win tonight, our destiny is in our hands. If we lose and Harvard wins, it is not. So tonight matters.

Next weekend is interesting:
- Cornell then Columbia at Harvard
- Penn at Yale than Brown

No question Penn's road is tougher.

If anyone but P or H win the IL tourney, it's a 16 and possibly a play-in game.

If Penn wins out through the tourney, probably looking at a 14. If Penn loses any games and wins the tourney, a 15 seed is likely.

Yeah, but the mid-major tournaments can bend the S-curve - that's the wild card. I agree though, Ivy winner is somewhere between 14 and a play-in and the 14 would require a win-out at minimum.
