I’m not going to go 10 rounds on this again because it just ends up frustrating the heck out of me that everyone just points to “he’s a Harvard grad,†rather than listening to my expert opinion as someone who has covered the league for 15 years and would know.
The only reason all this became a big story had nothing to do with the pick up game or the supermarket meeting. It had to do with other schools that traditionally couldn’t fish at the floor (but could go lower than Harvard) wanted to be able to do so now that Harvard could grab a kid or two there. Mission accomplished! And it paid off for those other schools too!
Ivy recruiting is incredibly interesting and complex. As someone who follows the story very closely, because it’s fascinating to me, it’s aggravating that somehow this ridiculous narrative is still coloring the amazing story that’s unfolding here - not just at one school but across the league. I recognize, though, that it’s not interesting to everyone.

"The amazing story that's unfolding here..."
HaHaHaHaHaHa!!!
So now it's gone from "those things happened 10 years ago" to those things didn't really matter. What's next - they never happened? More Penn propagated fake news?
Oh, and you throw in that the Miracle of St. Thomas of Amaker blessed all of us "bottom fishers." That's right from the "cut taxes for the wealthiest to benefit the poor because a rising tide lifts all boats" playbook.
Do you have some sort of advanced statistics to measure hysterical laughter?

I remember reading that one when I came back for a visit after graduation. Came after the “Wharton secedes from the University†issue.

And my reactions to those two stories were,"Yesss!!!!" followed by,"Noooooo!!!!" a year later. Both turned out to be hoaxes - like Russian meddling in the election.

If Penn Basketball is played principally for the players why is Steve D well paid and why do they play in the Palestra and not Hutch?
If Penn Basketball is played principally for the players why do so many of the contributors to the board pine for a return to big-time basketball where it is overwhelmingly obvious that the game is played for the fans and the money they bring in? True, when I swam at Penn it was for me. Nobody, but my wacky girlfriend cared how I did. But the guys playing 200 feet away in the Palestra were playing for the recognition of the 9,000 and change people that would crowd the Palestra.
This does not mean that the individual satisfaction of the players isn't important. It is. But the status of the program and its appeal to the Alumni (donors) comes first among several important things. Not first for fencing, or rowing, or maybe even women's BBall - but for football and men's basketball? Yes!

The only reason huh? Since apparently you would know, this is standard practice within the league?

How dare any of us question his expertise. These are his exact words:
Everyone just points to “he’s a Harvard grad,†rather than listening to my expert opinion as someone who has covered the league for 15 years and would know.
Self-proclaimed "expert opinion"? 15 years of "coverage"? I wonder for whom.

Kind of stunned to learn in this topic that David Perry gained ownership of an Ivy League basketball franchise.

I'm a Penn grad, but to me it's fairly obvious that Mike's expertise on the league is widely accepted (well beyond these boards). In addition to his Ivy b-ball twitter account, he's routinely asked to cover the league for a number of legitimate media outlets. To question his opinions is fair and I think we all like the spirited debate on these boards, but to question his credentials is a fool's errand.

Lyle is just being Lyle. He's really not nearly as arrogant and nasty as that post sounded.
Well, not as nasty, anyway.

That's hysterical! Too bad only the dozen or so people who read this board will get it.
