Lions are falling into some of their bad old habits tonight and the result is they are trailing Yale by six points with about 5:30 remaining in the half--(a) the big men are playing too far out from the basket and not penetrating at all; (b) Smith came of the game too soon; (c) Hunter is playing too much which translate into no offense, etc. Biggest issue is that the coaching staff took the hot shooter-Hickman off the floor

Miserable first half. Poor defense. Gave up a final three pointer to let Yale go up by 10. Our shooting is awful, our defense is non-existent. Very disappointing first half. Our three point shooting is particularly awful. We do not look like we were ready for Yale.

Yale is embarrassing Columbia tonight as the Lions' are down by ten at halftime thru a combination of miserable outside shooting and dumb interior play. Columbia's big men are being totally outplayed by their Yale counterparts which is ridiculous because the Lion bigs are much more athletic than the Yale players. If the Lions hope to win this game they need to either get hot from the outside or attack the boards. Hopefully, Engles will elucidate matters at halftime.

Castlin and Smith are keeping the Lions in the game in the second half with some slick outside play, but our big men are continuing to stink up the place. Meisner is just not staying the basket and that is hurting us badly.

Why does Meisner constantly back away from the basket?

Castlin is continuing to play smart including drawing a foul shooting a three. He's truly a high IQ type basketball player

Finally, Meisner finally goes to the basket smartly on a pick and roll and draws a foul. Imagine how good he would be if he did that more often.

Ridiculous foul call on Mike Smith when Onyi runs over him. Then, the refs call still another foul on Smith who for some reason is guarding Onyi. Lions cut the lead to three when Hickman hits from the outside on an assist by Castlin. Joe Jones calls time out. Let's see what adjustments he makes. 9:26 to go

Refs are now calling everything in Yale/Jones/Onyi's favor--what gives. Castlin makes a difficult three, but Phils gets away with a charge to return Yale's lead to six points. Mike Smith finally returns to the floor and scores to cut the lead to four with 6:54 remaining. Swain clearly mugs Smith on a drive and the refs miss it. Ref then blews the whistle by mistake on Castlin.

Outrageous. Jones called the 10second violation. Just a complete chock job by the refs. Every key call went agai st us in the last five minutes.

We lost because our interior defense stood flat-footed when Oni drove to the basket, while our three pt. shooting vanished--4 of 24, including 0-6 for Adlesh. A disappointing loss--we played hard, but it was one of those nights when even the dunks wouldn't go down.

We can still back into the tournament next Friday if we defeat Dartmouth, on the assumption that like us, Cornell will lose to Harvard, and Princeton recovers enough to beat Brown.

Agreed. We had tired legs. We shot 17% from the 3 point line. We had 16 TOs. Yale's defense completely stifled our running game.

And we had no one with the speed and athleticism to keep up with Oni. Time after time, Oni took the ball on the perimeter, drove to the hoop, and elevated over everyone for lay-ins. He was a match-up nightmare.

Despite our miserable shooting and our apparent inability to guard Oni, I still think that this would have been a winnable game had Jones not intimidated the refs into making half a dozen backbreaking calls in crunch time. The 10 second violation call was made by Jones. That one took the cake.

Lions shot 4 for 24 from the three point line. Worst shooting game of the season. Had they just made their average number of shots, the result would have been different. I don’t think it was Yale’s defense. Columbia’s shooting was just off. Many of the shots weren’t even close.

Let’s hope they return to the norm next week.

Not sure about the comparative athleticism of the bigs. Reynolds doesn’t rebound as much as Meisner, but some of that is schematic. The teams rebound at pretty similar rates overall, though Columbia was best on the boards last night (while Yale out rebounded Columbia in New Haven). But offensively they are similar.

The other spot is where I see more difference. Atkinson and Yess both had offers from high major programs. They don’t lack athleticism (particularly Atkinson). Despite the one high rating for Faulds, they were both more sought after to play at a higher level than he was.

I don’t know. Hard to complain about a call when the clock read 20 when the ball was still in Adlesh’s hands. The ref who called it was the one who was in position to see Adlesh, the clock, and the pass. He was also the ref who was furthest away from Jones.

Would have been a really fun game if Columbia had shot better, but they just had nobody who could stop Oni (26-9-8!).

Lions are still in decent playoff shape -- even a split most likely gets them in. But that requires winning on the road, which they haven't done since Nov. 14...

13 minutes for Stef was puzzling.
Oni at Yale wasn't nearly as potent.

Anyway, 4 is still a possibility but Dartmouth isn't a sure win.

Hopefully Friday playing an inferior team with nothing to play for they can get it done.
