I cannot find any positives to take away from this season. No road wins. Total inability to defend against the three point shot. No breakout performances by first years. Almost uncanny inability to close out winnable games.

Columbia's dismal record the last two years speaks for itself. Our Athletic Director, Peter Pilling, is a very smart guy and I am confident that he has a plan in place to put our Men's Basketball Program back on track. Pilling is certainly not going to allow Columbia Basketball to fall apart completely under his watch. For many obvious reasons, whatever action he takes has to be implemented quickly. Let's see what happens this week.

Agreed. As frustrating as this season must have been for the players and fans, firing Engles now would be unreasonable. That said, I think it will be reasonable to expect to see the team's performance take a significant step forward next year, with a fair metric being KenPom rating and ranking. If that doesn't happen, I think Engles, will (and probably should) find himself under a lot of pressure.

Remember Engles' first season at NJIT? He was 1 and 30 before his later successes.
.Maybe our 8-19 is Columbia's version of NJIT 's 1-30....

Two very disappointing seasons under Coach Engles. Regardless of what he accomplished at NJIT, his dismal record speaks for itself at Columbia. It just seems to me that the Lions have had plenty of talent the past two seasons-Smith, Petrosek, Meisner, Tape, Faulds, Castlin, Adlesh, Bibbs, Hanson and Stefanini, among others, and yet the complete lack of player development is mind boggling. I don't care if a basketball coach works the referees, but I do expect him or her to know what adjustments to make during a game and how to prevent repeated collapses. Frankly, under all the circumstances, I see no basis for optimism next year unless the two incoming recruits make an immediate dramatic impact, and whoever heard of a two man recruiting class in the Ivy League.

Again, the 2018 class was, possibly historically, shallow for Ivy recruits. Wouldn't take too much away from the performance this year.

mrjames, I give you lots of credit for being right on target about our freshman this year. With regard to the incoming class, I agree with you, in general, but, of course, you know that Kyle Smith spoiled us by finding some late and in some cases, great talent, at home or abroad, namely Petrasek (late boomer), Rosenberg, Mullins (Canada), Meisner (Germany) and Lo. It seems like Engles decided to stop recruiting for 2018-19 several months ago. That should not have happened as Columbia needs more than two incoming recruits to turn things around next year. People keep mentioning that Columbia is only losing two players to graduation, but that overlooks the fact that about five others did not play at all. Those returning players cannot be counted on to help next year so the Lions are really in need of several other quality recruits who could and should replace them. Hopefully, it's not too late for Columbia to locate a couple more talented players somehow, somewhere.

This made me feel bad as a Penn fan. If a two man recruiting class is unacceptable, we are in serious trouble (and so is Cornell). Half the league has either 1 or 2 coming in next year as of now.

"Crocodile Tears," my friend, as the needs of Ivy Tournament teams such as Penn and Cornell are much different from those of Columbia. Also, the key words in your statement are "as of now," because at least Cornell is likely to add more recruits. I would hope Engles has a couple of gems hidden away. If not, it would take a great leap of faith to expect Columbia to improve its basketball fortunes next year.
