As I'm sure many of you have heard by now, Penn cut down the Palestra nets (well, one of them) at 2 AM last night.
I wrote this on what I think it meant: http://www.cityofbasketballlove.com/news_article/s...

What happened to the other half of the band and cheerleaders? Neither article bothers to consider the point.

Interesting article. Here's the most salient passage:
"There was a time when this kind of empty-arena net-cutting behavior would’ve been scoffed at by Penn fans; indeed, many Penn fans mocked the same situation when Yale cut down the nets in an empty gym after Penn, Princeton and the Elis all tied for the title in 2002. If you’ve never seen a college basketball message board full of Ivy League-educated fans, just know that things can get pretty rough. (And if you really want to get them riled up, ask them what they think about the fact the Ivy League has a tournament at all.)"
For some, that time still exists - only we're left to scoff at ourselves now.

IIRC that situation was different in that Yale was the only team to actually cut down the nets after the regular season had concluded.
Of course, wandering in the desert for the past 10 years that have seemed like 40, we're now grateful for any chance we can get to do this.

Not trying to start an "I am Spartacus" thing. The article was great, although I had to laugh at the swipes at us on the board. I just didn't realize that we had another member of the press on the board. No concerns - just wondering!

Yes, that's true, and James Jones famously said,"It's great to be king!" It was their first time since the 60s, so it was quaint. I wonder how Harvard, who is used to winning like we once were, celebrated their shared regular season title?
But still...
We're Penn, dammit! (Apologies to Eddie Murphy and Gumby).

I read somewhere that they were presented with a trophy...Not sure what to make of that. As far as I'm concerned, if the team decided to do it on the ride home, fine by me. It would have been cool to let other fans know it was happening through Twitter. I was out of town but would have gone down had I been home.

Personally, I love it that the team had a celebration like that. I understand completely that the past Penn teams had higher expectations and had won multiple championships. If college kids who had been losing as much as Penn did in prior years can't have a private celebration to acknowledge their accomplishments with each other, then life is truly sad. I hope no one on this board truly begrudges them that.
Congrats on an amazing regular season to the Quakers, and good luck for the tournament(s)!
