The Women’s NIT expanded its format to 64 teams this season. As a result, the seclction criteria changed and is different than the men’s ... making the 2nd seed in the Ivy Tournmanet relevant for post season selections.
Automatic Berths
A team offered an automatic berth by the WNIT shall be the team that is a.) the highest-finishing team in its conference’s regular-season standings, and b.) is not selected for the NCAA Tournament. A team that fulfills these qualities will earn the WNIT automatic berth for its respective conference, regardless of overall record.
https://www.womensnit.com/news/archives/01-2018
Right now 22 conferences are listed ... there are 10 missing conferences that appear to be multiple bids to the NCAAs ... so the 8th or 9th place team in a power conference will get into the NIT
https://www.womensnit.com/tournament-field.html
As the Ivy League is the 8th/9th women’s conference, a bit sad not to see Penn or Harvard with 50 RPIs not being mentioned in the first eight teams out of the NCAA ... but that is likely the the mid major bias ... the 2nd / 3rd Ivy would likely have need to be 35 - 45 range for mutiple bids ... given the returning talent at in the league, would not be a surprise in 2018-2019.
As the NIT does try to minimize travel expenses in the early rounds ... the shortest road trip possible in the NCAAs could occur.
Fully expect Harvard to receive an at large bid ... and Dartmouth & Yale with RPIs in the 120s likely on the bubble - and perhaps CBT bound.
Note: the Rule Changes for the women’s NIT are minor (subs on FT & certain foul calls) ... there will be no repainting of the 3 point line or the paint as will happen in the Men’s NIT.

For those interested in seeing what may be coming to the men’s game - and clearly would impact some of Steve’s strategies:
https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/a rticle/2...
The experimental rules will help determine if a marginally more difficult three-point shot will be effective for men’s college basketball, and if widening the lane will reduce physicality and create more driving opportunities. In addition, the number of possessions and any impact on the pace and flow of the game will be evaluated.
Give the rules would impact the layout of the floor ... and look like the same womens FIBA dimetions (at least for 3 point line) ... would expect that the women’s game would follow at some point - the WNBA uses the same dimensions as the NBA, except for 3 point line (which is the FIBA standard).

Believe the brackets will come out by 11:30 PM ... all the teams have been revealed ... now its working through who travels and where ... we have the potential for the hosting or undertaking the shortest road trip in D1

Penn Automatic Qualifier for Women’s NIT 03-12-18 11:07 PM - Post#252638
In response to JDP
Round 1 Albany (24-7 - 12-4 America East - 2nd) 9-5 on the road
Friday - Palestra - Time: TBD
Penn seeded in the traditional 6th seed position - but not sure if the seeding holds true in the NIT with travel considerations and whose arena is able to host.
https://www.womensnit.com/bracket.html
Common Opponents
Dartmouth W 76-61
Binghamton W 63-46
Binghamton W 57-53
Same conference as former Penn assistant Chris Day (Vermont)
Harvard draws Fordham at Fordham in what looks like a 1-16 game - but again, not sure if you can look at the traditional seeding format.

And hey--if Penn wins, we might get the chance to check out that 5600 seat arena at St. Johns!

Yes, the winner of the Penn/Albany game would play the winner of St. John's/Marist at the home site of one of the winners.
Not sure if St John's is considered a 3 so they would automatically get the home game ... it may depend on which venue would draw the best.
Of the pod:
Penn (61) has the best RPI on NCAA.com Albany (83), St. John's (75), Marist (179)
St. John's (81.18) Is ahead of Penn (77.56) on on Sagarin ... so HCA would be nice. Albany (71.68) & Marist (69.59)
