Yes, the turnovers felt like killers, but they really weren’t— we didn’t Turn it over too much. It just feels like any turnover is too many when you have so little margin for error.
Going back to things that were like turnovers, we also got a little too excited in the first half and had 2 straight possessions where we took quick contested 3s (Foreman and Wood).

I've read so many posts today, I cannot remember who said this originally; but the FTs (and Graham) were the difference in this game. The FT's were significant beyond the points left behind given the timing and how they affected the game tactically. Graham was hitting from so far out, there was nothing to be done about it. Penn needed to play a nearly perfect game to win this, but 3 turnovers to start the game assured that was not in them yesterday.
I said before the game started that losing the game on FTs was the worst case scenario for me; even worse than a blowout. What I had in mind was losing a late game lead (see; Yale II) but this script was painful when I think if what might have been.
With all that off my chest, I must second all the comments about what an unexpectedly great and entertaining season this has been and my appreciation for these kids and their coaches. A job well done. The league will certainly be better next year, but Penn will be too, and I look forward to a few months of not debating over the tournament; either its existence or its location.

Despite the questionable call on the 3 pter by Devonte Graham at half, I was very happy to have some quality referees. These guys were very good relative the preschool refs we get in the Ivy's almost every night.

While better than what we are used to, they still let Lightfoot get away with murder on the moving screens, and that had a big impact on getting Kansas' players (particularly Graham) open enough for big shots to fall.

They let us get away with moving screens too. That was the consistent style of these refs, so I don't complain too much about that. And the shots they hit were from so far out that we weren't going to get out that far anyway.

I agree on the point of their threes (and think I said as much), but we weren't committing any moving screens from what I could see. Mostly our guys would roll off the screens once set, whereas Lightfoot was following the player as he tried to fight over or under the screen.

It had to be the best officiated game of the year for us. Very consistent and let them play. I’d take those refs on any Ivy game

The guy who made the worst calls, including the one that gave Graham the 3-shot NBA continuation foul at the end of the first half, was Donnie Eppley, who also worked the semi against Yale. Guess he felt since he couldn’t impact that game because it was never close, he had to make up for it.
That was the only Penn game he worked this year, other two guys had never seen us.

That competitive loss to Kansas doesn't look that bad right now, does it?

Was thinking along the same lines though we mostly didn't play against Azuibuke - and he looked awful in the few minutes he did play against us - so it's not like Duke was playing against the same team we did. Azuibuke fouled out rather quickly but he was a difference maker when out there.

Lightfoot killed us and started in the next game against Seton Hall but then didn't play at all yesterday. Meanwhile De Souza, who played poorly against us, played key minutes vs. Duke.
I thought Kansas had more composure. Duke was kinda chippy/thuggish.

I was surprised that Duke let Kansas get that wide open a 3 pointer to tie the game....they were on the verge of victory.

Their zone had problems with that spacing all game. Whichever one of their bigs who was playing the wing instead of the middle was almost always cheating back toward the paint, and was never able to rotate out to the shooter fast enough. The guard playing up couldn't cover enough distance to make up for the slow rotation, either. I saw Kansas exploit that weakness consistently.

But with 30 seconds left and a 3 point lead, get those guards out there. No way a big should be counted on to cover on the perimeter.

The other thing that got exposed this year was Duke's inability to play man-to-man with a lineup constructed of four freshmen and one senior. They didn't have the trust and continuity needed to play man-to-man, and they just weren't quick enough.
It looked as if they had decided early on that they were going to live and die playing Bagley and Carter together, even if it made them a weaker defensive team.
