They played very well. They were even with Kansas, a top 10 team, in their half court game. They lost because of a combination of missed free throw and some 27 foot 3 pointers that cannot be defensed. But we were down by 4 with 5 minutes to go and the fact that we again missed 2 FTs and then started chucking to come back made the final differential greater than the game play reflected. It was a good performance. A game against Kansas required a perfect one. But it was winnable.

It was arguably a good performance, and you have made a nice argument. I concede.

I’m more worried about losing Foreman on defense than offense. Yes, I think Antonio can grow into Foreman’s role. The question is who grows into Antonio’s.

Don't think about it this way. Next year will be a new team with new roles. No single player replaced Matt Howard this year. Instead, the coaches reworked the offensive and defensive schemes, and Howard's various contributions were covered by multiple players. I'm sure the same will happen next year. I have faith in The Steve.

It was a good performance. The question is whether it was good enough to pay dividends on the recruiting trail. I'm thinking that it was.

Seems like it would be a negligible factor. The Harvard game might make a difference though.

I hope you're right. I think recruiting may ultimately boil down to how well SD can sell prospective student athletes on the team culture he and the staff have been fostering, contrasted with that of our closest competitors.

At least the advantages of the Palestra and the Big 5 should be back in the play with the most wanted recruits. I can't see why we can't compete very well for as long as we have an Irish head coach.

Jeff, thanks for your well thought out posts. I'm still decompressing so can't provide much in the way constructive opinion. Other than I enjoyed reading them and agree with the bulk of it.

It's clear that Donahue doles out time to the guys who do what he considers useful stuff and don't do what he considers cardinal sins. it's probably not much different from other coaches but it sure seemed like some players disappeared while others popped up and became mainstays, sometimes unexpectedly. It was the same last year and will probably be the same next year.

It would be good to get people's thoughts on what each returnee who isn't part of the core needs to do to make it into the core.

That's a very thoughtful post Erev St. Patty's Day.

Tommy’s quote about The Palestra needs to be in every recruiting pitch.

Maybe we’ve had it wrong all along and Tommy just went into that grocery store to tell Mrs. Rosen how great the Palestra is.

To get in rotation:

Jackson Donahue: come back as Caleb Wood. Jackson actually shot the 3 well. Messed up his ORAT by being supernaturally bad at the line. Would like to see him take a step forward defensively like Wood did as a senior.

You think he's going to grow 4-5 inches this off season?

One way of looking at all this is that, with the departure of Foreman and Wood, there will be room for two or three players to get into the rotation. (This assumes that the Brodeur-Rothschild-Betley -Woods-Goodman core we saw at season's end remains stable, which I realize is a fairly large assumption). There are a lot of guys who will have a chance at those minutes-- by my count, at least nine. My guess is that the younger non-freshmen will probably get the first bite at the apple, meaning Williams, Simmons and Scott. If any of them aren't up to the task, then there's no predicting what will happen. Just as this season didn't play out like anybody expected, we can be pretty sure that next year will be that way as well.

Seriously, I don't see Donahue as anything but a role similar to Sam Jones this year--designated shooter for specific games. Silpe also is someone I don't see having a major role.

I see Jelani Williams having a major role, Goodman playing more and Eddie Scott playing more, with Tyler Hamilton a question mark. Obviously, Antonio will play a lot.

We will need Simmons to take a major step forward in the frontcourt. Obviously no one knows if we will get anything from Mark Jackson or Wang, but if we could get them some minutes, that would be very helpful.

I don’t see any of them providing the outside shooting threat like Wood although in other ways they will be helpful.

I'm hoping that the staff can coach Williams up over the summer-- they've shown the ability to do that, so if the kid's willing to do the work, there's a pretty good chance it will happen. If not, I consider it plausible (if a bit of a long shot) that Wang will be able to contribute next year. I don't expect that Mark Jackson will ever get off the bench, and will leave Penn as an extremely tall, well-educated fellow who played fewer minutes than Keith Widmer. If neither Simmons nor Wang is able to contribute next season, then I think we'll see a lot of three-and-out, which isn't necessarily a bad thing at all. The Steve has shown himself to be a resourceful guy, so I'm expecting he'll come up with something.

Of course, there's one other possibility here: the much-discussed Colin-McManus-comes-out-o f-nowhere-to-save-the-day storyline.

That's probably correct. The only one who might be able to do it is Williams, who I've been told has a nice shot. I also hear tell that Kuba can shoot it, although he's clearly a dark horse.

Colin McManus looks like an absolute stud in warmups.

The fact that he never plays tells me Stevie D sees things otherwise.

I'm positive that's correct. I'm just fantasizing that he turns out to be the next Donald Moxley. Wouldn't that be awesome?
