Next up for Penn is St. John’s

Monday 7:00 PM ET
Queens, N.Y. (Carnesecca Arena)

• St. John’s was 5th in the Big East (17-14, 9-9). They are 11-5 at home. They played a lot of teams that made the post season:

o 3-10 vs. NCAA tournament teams: (Wins at Miami: +10, Nova+6, Creighton +4)
o Non-Big East losses vs. NCAA tournament teams : South Carolina: 16 points – USF: 7 pts – Buffalo 1
o 6-1 vs NIT teams

• Common Opponents: St. John’s beat Albany (Penn’s opening round NIT opponent) 71-66 back in December at Albany (Penn won at Home 76-61). St. John’s split with Nova: winning 70-64 at home in Jan – 3 days before Penn won at Nova 79-77. And lost 69-52 at Nova in Feb.

• St. John’s is 52 in Sagarin – 81.5 rating, but 77.37 recent (5-7 in last 12 games). Penn is 73 in Sagarin on the 77-78 range. St. John’s has a 75 RPI and Penn is 61.

• St. John’s averages 66.4 points per game

o 41 two point attempts – 17 treys and 16 FT per game
o 19 two point makes (45%) – 6 treys (36%) and 11 FT (70%)
o ~ 56% of their points come inside the arc – 23% from trey and 17% from the line

• St. John’s opponent averaged 61.3 points per game (-5.2)

o 39 two point attempts – 16 treys and 17 FT per game
o 17 two point makes (41%) – 5 treys (33%) and 13 FT (71%)
o ~ 53% of their points come inside the arc – 26% from trey and 21% from the line

Matchups:

• St. John’s plays small: only 1 player is bigger than 6 feet

• They have balance 10 ppg scoring from all spots on the floor

• St. Johns’ has a 60 point scoring advantage (+2 pp quarter per game) in both the 2nd and 3rd quarters and are even in the 1st and 4th.

In the paint:

• Box out 2nd team Big East 6-0 senior forward Maya Singleton – she averages a double-double (11.1-11.3) a game – 1/3 of her rebounds are on the offensive end. Not a threat from three (0-2) 25% of her points are from the line. You likely can get her in foul trouble, as she averages three foul a game.

On ball defense:

• The Red Storm offense runs through 5-7 red shirt freshman guard Tiana England, who also was a unanimous selection to the all Big East freshman team with 160 assists vs. 95 turnovers and 42 steals while just under 10 points a game.
• The rest of the team appears turnover prone with nearly 10 turnovers per game … 100 more turnovers than assists.

Quartet of three:

On paper the four players look like carbon copies - all have made approximately 40 treys on 115 shots and average ~10 points per game. The quartet includes:

• Big East Freshmen of the Year, 5-7 guard Qadashah Hoppie
• 5-11 junior guard Akina Wellere
• 5-10 sophomore guard Alisha Kebbe from Neumann-Goretti
• 5-10 sophomore guard Andrayah Adams

The Iron 7:

• The Red Storm dresses 10, but only seven really play. Height and likely easy put backs comes from 6-3 senior forward Imani Litteton (4.5 ppg scoring).

Many thanks to JDP for excellent preview, as there are no programs .

Think I can already disqualify this place as a venue for the Ivy tourney:

1. Parking limited, to put it mildly; was fortunate to find a place on Union Tpke right near the arena, because everything on campus requires a permit. In fairness, on weekends, you wouldn't have the commuters, but even at that, you might have to hope it was over spring break to guarantee sufficient space.
2.) Transit access not much better; a mile's walk or bus ride from the subway, even further from the LIRR.
3.) I just had to go through a metal detector to get in, folks. This for a women's game at which the attendance is a generously estimated 200, including teams, cheerleaders, band, staff, etc. This ain't Hanover any more, boys and girls, or even New Haven.
4.) For not being a huge place (5,300 or so.), seats are not well laid out; the sidelines go three tiers up, with the upper deck starting to verge on Jadwin territory. While I haven't gotten the backstage tour, I also can't imagine that there's much more party/mingling space than at the Palestra, for those who care about such things. Guess we'll have to settle for Bridgeport after all.

The height is bothering the Quakers at both ends.

Now down 13-6 with a little a minute to play in the 1Q.

Penn down 14-8 after 1. Neither Nwokedi nor Parker doing much inside yet, and after an initial couple of threes by Whitlatch, not much going on outside, either. St. John's running a light press, which we are breaking, but not for any easy baskets. Johnnies' offensive rebounding as advertised, although fortunately not too much consequences so far.

A bit more room for the bigs to maneuver leads to a couple of hoops. That plus a Ross bomb has the game all square at 16 at the TV timeout.

Yeah, amazing how the post clears out a bit when they start making threes, although even now still not very efficient down there. We are actually outrebounding them somehow, 18-15. 9 turnovers, though, which is way too many for us. But, we are up 24-22 at half.

St. John's upping the pressure and the pace, and it's affecting Penn.

27-26 St. Johns early in the 3rd.

Johnnies on their way to setting some offensive rebounding records tonight. Getting some very long possessions as a result.

32-30 St. John's after 3. Made a step-back 3 at the buzzer, something we cannot do. This is definitely a clinic on how not to play offense. Someone's got to dig deep and figure out how to score. Ross and Russell are particularly frustrated right now.

Parker with an awesome baseline reverse gives Penn a 1 point lead, only to have St. John's hit a 3 at the 3rd quarter buzzer.

30-32.

St. John's really pressuring Penn after every defensive board--they don't want Penn to break out for a transition hoop. There are opportunities for a quick score downcourt, but they have to be aware. In the half court set, I don't recall many (if any) uncontested Penn shot attempts (unlike StJ which has had many), so they should look for those whenever possible.

35-38 with 7 to play. St Johns actually starting to shoot better now--had they shot better in the previous quarter, they'd be up double digits by now.

38-35 SJU, just under 7 to go. Parker made a great move for an and-1, but couldn't convert (shooting under 30% fron the line so far ) and then SJU made two easy baskets. Got to figure it out here!

Our guards cannot handle their athleticism. They simply can't get open for either a drive or an outside shot.

Open STJ 3 makes that lead awful fleeting.

Time out on the court.

Two nice moves by Parker and a made FT to go up by 2, but then SJ knocks down a 3. Got to get some stops.

Have we made 2 straight FT attempts tonight? I don't remember any.
