That is great news. For those who haven't followed the recruiting closely, Ellis is a wing listed at 6-5 185 lbs on his team's maxpreps roster, which is submitted by his HS coach. He is from South Bend (IN), and played this year at Brewster Academy (NH). Was a regular senior, not a post-grad. His father is LaPhonso Ellis, who played for Notre Dame and then for 11 years.

Ellis reportedly had offers from Akron, American, Ball State, Cleveland State, Dartmouth, Fort Wayne, Grand Canyon, Indiana State, IUPUI, Lafayette, UNCG, Toledo, Valpo, Also had an early offer from Cal, when it was coached by his father's friend Cuonzo Martin. I assume that offer was rescinded when Martin left Cal. Note that only ESPN reports the Grand Canyon offer.

1. Walter Ellis looks to grow his basketball game at Brewster

Article on Ellis from last summer, when he decided to move from Adams HS in South Bend to Brewster Academy. Brewster annually has one of the nation's stronger teams, with multiple D1 recruits each year. One of its recent players was Donovan Mitchell, who is a strong candidate for NBA ROY.

One other article that has some info not reported on other sites:

"So who is LaPhonso’s kid? His name is Walter Ellis. He’s a 6-5 shooting guard for John Adams High School in Indiana. He’s “new to our sport,” LaPhonso explained: He played goalie in hockey since the age of 5 and then dabbled with football, as a wide receiver, starting at age 9. But Walter picked up his dad’s sport rather quickly, and had a huge summer on the circuit, prior to his junior year. Per LaPhonso, Walter has offers from schools including Xavier, Ole Miss, Belmont and California, where Martin coached until this March."

It's interesting that Ellis was a hockey and football player - not basketball - until he reached HS. Might mean he has more room to develop. It's also interesting to see reports from his father that at one time he had offers from Xavier, Ole Miss, and Belmont - ones that weren't shown on the standard sites. Like the offer from Cal, I'd guess the ones from Xavier and Ole Miss were off the table by this year.

One thing about Ellis is that he was very much under-the-radar at Brewster Academy, being their 6th man. Their first five are, respectively, committed to Wake, Oregon, West Virginia, Syracuse, UConn, and Washington. The year before their seniors committed to Providence, Nebraska, St. John's, Georgia Tech, Florida, Purdue, and maybe others.

He was recently ranked 37th in New England by NERR, which follows that area very closely. It is loaded with strong D1 players due to all the powerful prep schools, many of which bring in tons of seniors and post-grads to polish their games. The five players ranked just below Ellis are going to Davidson, Towson, William and Mary, Manhattan, and Cleveland State. There are likely another 20 D1 players ranked below him as well.

While not a post player, Ellis seems like he will be an instant contributor. Good bloodlines and good basketball competition would appear to make him a high profile recruit. Welcome to Buckell, Mr. Ellis.

Like it. This guy is my new favorite Bison player. Paul Newman didn't do it for me. We got the good one.

Highlight videos:

1. Walter Ellis - Shooting

This is, of course, a highlight video, so you can't judge consistency, but his stroke looks good and he appears to be able to shoot off the dribble. Also he is willing to shoot from 6 feet beyond the arc, which likely indicates good shooting range - since his coach presumably would frown on shots from that distance if he can't make a good percentage.

2. Walter Ellis - Attacking

Hard to replace three players the caliber, of Nana, Zack, and Stephen, but I am feeling good about next season and the way we are shaping up. We seem to have the pieces to compete at the top level in the Patriot League, with a group of players, that most other coaches in the league would love on their roster. This is no knock on either Flannery or Paulsen, I really believe that our players like playing for Coach Davis, and the way he gives his players more freedom on the court, just perhaps his style is a winning type of play that also adds some fun to the game.

very good news.

thanks to B137 for all the info you dug up. a number of additionally encouraging factors including his late entry to playing hoops, so more potential upside, knew he was an excellent three point shooter (seemed to be primary role at Brewster) so was good to see the video with him taking it to the hoop and his athleticism on display in some of the dunks.
