Two Super Bowls are tough to top. The Braves, Canes and Gators finally winning championships were all amazing. There's nothing like the first time.
But for me, the greatest sports moment of my life was the overtime win over Kansas City. Stenerud missed and Garo keeked a touchdown.
That was the most exciting game of all time and the improbable victory was all a 13 year old could ask for.

Braves also beat Cleveland for their one and only WS victory in my lifetime. That was a heck of an Indians team, but Glavine was heroic.
I got so drunk that night. I ended up stumbling about 5 miles to get home after a Halloween party.

November 3rd is now an official holiday in the Nation household.
Starting with last year, a Cubs cake is ordered and a 32 oz aluminum can of lite beer is circulated during dessert (I normally don't drink at all and have never been drunk in my life....but I had some sips in 2016 and am continuing that mesorah).

Miracle on Ice is the only hockey game I've ever watched with interest.

And given that the Cold War was at an almost all-time zenith after the Russian invasion of Afghanistan 2 months earlier (which led to the ridiculous US boycott of the Moscow summer Olympics a few months later--guess it's ok to boycott when it's at their place), the victory by a college team over the most feared hockey team in the world was just amazing. By way of comparison, look how a non-NHL US team did this year at the Olympics. They were terrible.

ESPN had a superb 30 for 30 which looked at this through the perspective of the USSR hockey team and its history. Utterly fascinating. This really was a tiny little blip--for a long time before and a long time afterwards, the Soviets really ruled supreme.
They also showed the facilities where the Soviet team was housed. Disgraceful. We were not very accommodating hosts.
Anyways, I missed this one as it was on Friday night. But it was all anyone wanted to talk about at kiddush the next morning at shul. And don't forget--the gold medal still had to be won on Sunday morning, and that did not come easy.

My personal favorite--certainly not important outside West Philly--Penn over Nova in the 1972 NCAA tournament. After 71, I never wanted a team of mine to win so badly.

And for me, the Eastern Regionals in '79---granted, we already had shocked North Carolina, but we had to gut out two games against good teams in Syracuse and St John's to get to the freaking Final Four.

Despite the wonderful outcome, my euphoria that day in Greensboro was dimmed a bit by the quality of those games, especially the St. John's game. Neither team played very well.

The Nebraska game is certainly my best moment as a Quaker fan. This year's Harvard game is close. I also recall a Temple game where we hit 3 three throws with about 1 second left to win. I am only referencing games I attended.

That Temple game was the first Penn-Temple game with Dunphy on the visitors bench.
Mark Zollar hit all 3 free throws to win.
That was a pretty good night.

I'm going to go in a different direction and recall January 12, 1969, the Jets over the Colts in Super Bowl III. I had been a bigger fan of the AFL than the NFL and this was the game that really cemented the merger and the legitimacy of AFL teams. Joe Willie Namath was the man who made it happen, with his bonus contract, victory guarantee and delivery of same.
Of course, the Mets' world series win nine months later was right up there too.
