And yet Neil Bernstein remains persona non grata.

I actually became friendly with Bernstein's sister and her family (at the time we met, I had no idea Neil was her brother) when my wife and I lived in Los Angeles.
Mazel Tov to Lefko. He squeezed every ounce of production out of what he had.

I'll never forget Bernstein blowing TWO bunnies at the buzzer that would have won (or tied, don't recall) the game in Barton Hall in '86. That team was cursed.

Hopefully Zack Rosen will one day join Lefko.
I can't really think of any other Quaker since Lefko who merits inclusion.

Except that I don't think Matt is Jewish (though I'm not 100% sure)

Lefko is the definition of grit. So gritty that you forgot how frigging good a player he was.
He was also the player who best understand how to take advantage of the student sidecourt section. He had a habit of running up and down the court on our side whenever matched up a against a player who was annoying him just so we could yell at him.
Congrats, big guy!

I still have flashes of Lefkowitz playing great Alamo defense at the rim against UNC during the NCAA tournament, as Tar Heels barreled in in numbers, eventually overwhelming him. The dude could really play.

Yes, he was from California (La Jolla). The family had moved there from Salt Lake City (I believe his grandfather was a rabbi--very lonely at the time to be a MOT out there).

I have a friend whose a MOT who grew up there (Dad was a physics professor at University of Utah) - it was pretty lonely even in the 70s by his account! Although he did say the Mormon girls in H.S. treated him well. The attraction of forbidden fruit, it seems.

Article in this week's Jewish Exponent notes that with the change in mission of the Gershman Y, the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame will be moved, location undetermined at this time. Hope that Lefko doesn't fall when they move him!
