If true, big loss for Penn.

this is perhaps as bad of a time as any but I'd been meaning to ask you. While I'm sure everyone contributes, do we have an assistant that is our primary recruiter? If you were to look at, say, our last 10 recruits, do 7 or 8 come from one guy?
I'm thinking like the way Yanny used to be the primary recruiter for Harvard. Was Ira that? is it more split up?

It would be a loss, but there's always turnover among assistants, and good head coaches plan for that. If Ira's able to leverage his position at Penn for a high-major assistant job, then good for him. He's been a mensch for the program, both as a player and as a coach, and I wish him nothing but success.

As we all know, Bruce Pearl, while a good coach, has a tainted recruiting history at several of his previous positions. Presumably, he is keeping it clean at Auburn but Ira would do well to do his due diligence before joining that group.

Gotta think this is an opening in for another alum assistant working elsewhere to return. Trice? Jordan? Shawn for example can’t be sure he’s going to survive the upcoming regime change at TU, and he wouldn t have to go house hunting.

Deep thanks to Coach Bowman for being a great player and coach at Penn. I don't doubt that he was a big part of Penn's turnaround. I hope that Donahue has a pipeline of great future assistant coaches!

Loosing assts to higher paying jobs is part of the landscape. Pennfb lost its QB coach who took the head position at Ithaca. The Defensive line coach just took the top position at Bowdoin.
Ira will always be revered as a great Quaker; however, let’s not pretend he was responsible for the turnaround. Sure - he was part of it and deserves some credit. But - he was also part of the debacle which preceded it.
This is Steve’s team and I’m confident this won’t be a problem for Penn. I also believe this is a logical and probably healthy move for Ira.

Question is who does Stevie D get to replace Ira? A guy like Mike Jordan? My guess is he promotes Mihalich and hires a young guy.

Donahue knows how to do his job. I'm sure he has had numerous replacement assistant options in the works for at least a year.

I am sure he has thought through Assistant scenarios previously. It’s a matter of who is available (this is late in the cycle) and what he can pay. My guess on promoting Joe is in part because it’s hard to find a top Assitant this late and much easier to find a younger guy. He also has to think Nat Graham will move on soon too.

I have total faith in Donahue. It's far easier to find and hire a talented assistant when you have a rep as being a good guy and not an a-hole. Would be wise to promote Mihalich assuming he's doing a good job - it sends the message that your hard work will be rewarded if you sign up at Penn.
Congrats to Ira Bowman. Hope it all works out at Auburn.

Sorry for the delay, didn't see this post originally. My understanding on how staff's recruit is basically "it depends". Coaches divy up the recruiting responsibilities differently. Some do it geographically and others do it demographically. Some have a flat structure where each coach handles their players from start to finish, and some have a hierarchy where a coach sets it up for another coach.
Most staff's have assistants kick the bushes, start the relationship and then involve the head coach in the relationship when the process is further down the line and interest is generated.
I know Ira was responsible for a number of the players on the current roster including Dev Goodman, Jelani Williams, Eddie Scott and Antonio Woods. Pretty sure Ira brought in Bryce Washington as well. Ira was the champion of Darnell Foreman when no one else wanted him and I heard the story that he sold Jerome on Darnell late in the cycle. Nat Graham has been a huge recruiter for Donahue going back to Cornell days. Among other things, he covers the Prep schools where we got AJ, Max, Jackson, etc.
So for Penn it has been balanced with Ira and Nat both bringing in key recruits.

Interesting. Thanks for the perspective.
I wonder how Ira landed on Bruce Pearl's radar.

Ira Bowman to Auburn? 07-10-18 01:18 PM - Post#258614

Besides the Adler connection to Penn, Zack Rosen played on the 2009 Maccabiah team coached by Pearl.
Adler was an assistant at La Salle earlier in his career, as was Joe Mihalich Sr. though I don't think they overlapped.
Sometimes these chance encounters turn into a job. Kind of like how Jerome is an assistant coach for the Celtics.

I am sure Steve Donahue knows Bruce Pearl quite well. If Ira saw the job and asked Steve to call for him, that could easily be how it happened.

I hope to see Ira in the head coaching ranks soon. I know nothing about his coaching ability, but I like everything I know about him to date.
