Think he's been a pickup basketball player down in Hampton Roads. Or perhaps Norfolk.

He bent a few recruiting rules at Harvard. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2010/7/5/blak en...
Still a good pickup for the staff.

Columbia must have carefully vetted Kenny Blakeney and decided the risks-reward ratio was clearly in favor of his hire. That being the case, I am very happy to have him as an assistant coach and expect good things to happen both for him and the Lions. Blakeney, along with associate head coach Jean Bain, could prove to be a formidable recruiting duo in the Ivy League. Columbia needs to successfully recruit several outstanding players this year just to remain competitive in the Ivy League. Blakeney is a proven recruiter of big-time talent so I would expect some outstanding players to head our way very soon. More than that, Blakeney has the necessary playing and coaching experience to strongly develop our current players. I am very hopeful that his hiring will bring the bad news cycle to an end

This is likely a good hire. In addition to having experience with Ivy recruiting—leaving the silly pickup game references aside, he is likely to have a good understanding of defense given his having played for Coach K

No doubt, Blakeny has the (Keith) Wright stuff.

How many assistant coaches do we now have? I seem to recall that the IL generally sanctions two full time assistants and one part time assistant but I may be mistaken here.

Chet:
I think you're very much correct; and they'll bump that fellow Jesse Agel to the Basketball Operations spot that Jon Safir resigned from. Quite come down for Agel, who was the head men's basketball coach at Brown just 6 years ago!

Presumably, Kenny Blakeney was at least, in part, responable for bringing in our last four recruits, so I am very disappointed to see him leave. Hopefully, the Lions will find a suitable replacement for him in the near future.

one is a volunteer. Koby Altman went from volunteer coach and living with his mom in Brooklyn to GM of the Cavaliers within 6 years. Not bad!

Blakeney had his introductory press conference at Howard.
https://wtop.com/ncaa-basketball/2019/ 05/howard-in...
- Introductory press conferences are, if nothing else, primetime for optimism for the future. A blank slate, a fresh start, all benefits and no doubt. But all that notwithstanding, the bar for new Howard men’s basketball coach Kenny Blakeney has been set extremely high.
“As I told him when I met with him, I see no reason why we shouldn’t be participating in the NCAA Tournament every year. That’s one of the ambitions of the program,†said Howard President Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick at Monday’s introductory press conference.
“Our expectation is every March we’re going to turn on the television and watch Mr. Blakeney on the sidelines with the rest of the team representing the university well.â€
No pressure.
Bear in mind, this is a program that hasn’t finished over .500 since 2001-02; that hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 1991-92; that hasn’t had consecutive winning seasons since the late ‘80s, more than 30 years ago. But the school believes it’s found the right man to turn that around. -
- “My first call when we were looking for a coach was to Tommy Amaker,†said Howard Director of Athletics Kery Davis. “And Tommy Amaker said, ‘I only have one name for you: Kenny Blakeney.’†-
