Just happened. He is a good 6-2 CG, likely destined to play some point for the Bison.

Alexander Rice commits to Bucknell

It has been tough to track Rice's recruitment. To begin, he apparently doesn't use twitter - unlike 98% of recruits - and his coaches have used it sparingly. Also his recruitment was reportedly held down due to many programs thinking he was locked up for Monmouth.

Reported offers from Pitt, Rutgers, Illinois State, Manhattan, UNC Greensboro, Monmouth, Penn, Loyola, Towson, Tulane, and a few other Ivy/Patriot schools not identified. Yale was heavily in the mix. I would not be surprised if the Pitt and Rutgers offers were no longer on the table.

Ari Rosenfeld (scouting director for City of Basketball Love): "Expect Xander Rice to be an All-Patriot level performer at Bucknell sooner rather than later. The son of Monmouth HC King Rice is a 6'3" combo guard + a high-level shooter who had a standout July with @WeR1Basketball. Impressive work by the Bison staff here."

Sounds like a great fit for Bucknell. Coaching staff has done a good job with this class.

even without Pitt and Rutgers, that is a nice little list of offers, and if it was dampened as speculated it could have been quite impressive.

i guess we shouldn't expect the Monmouth series to be extended as i assume his dad would not want to coach against him (and surely face the humiliation of losing).

Some highlight videos. No one ever looks bad in a collection of highlights, but it may give you some idea of his style.

I'm very excited by this commitment!

It's impressive how many sons of successful basketball coaches, as well as the son of an NBA All Star, have chosen Bucknell in recent years. I don't believe this would happen if their dads, who really know the game, didn't have great respect for the Bucknell program.

Yes, Bucknell has had many sons of coaches in recent years. Off the top of my head, they include these sons of past and current coaches:

College Coaches:

John Griffin
Cam Ayers (also NBA coach)
JC Show
Nate Jones
Walter Ellis (also NBA player)
Alex Rice

HS Coaches:

Matt Quinn
Bryson Johnson
Chris Hass
Cory Starkey

I am probably missing a few as well.

I watched the highlight videos. Here are some of my takes...

Pros - Looks very strong and well built. Looks to be able to handle some physicality. Seemed very even keeled. In highlight reels, guys tend to show themselves celebrating some big plays. The most we got was a fist pump or two, which I like. Always looked under control. Smooth and agile. Scores at the rim with both hands.

Stuff to work on - Shot is a little low on the release. May have trouble getting off threes against bigger guys with that motion. Not much mid-range in the highlights, they were almost all threes and layups. No Defense or Passing (other than one oop) either. How well can he defend?

I also noticed the low release. But he does get the ball off very quickly, which helps. The positive spin on this is that Lafayette's Alex Petrie has a similar release, both low and quick, and he was PL ROY this past season, averaging over 18 ppg in league play.

Yes, no defense or passing shown on the highlight reel. But the staff watched him play full games on a number of occasions, so I trust they are confident in his ability to do those things. Btw, even though I believe he will see time at PG for Bucknell, he often played SG in AAU/HS because he was paired with very high level PG's. Thus he only shifted to the point to give the starter a breather. For example, in AAU he played with PG's Isaiah Wong and Jalen Gaffney, who both have numerous P5 offers.

PJM, I was just thinking the same thing. His 3-pointer almost looks like a set shot that starts at his chest and goes up from there. Hey, with so many schools recruiting him, it must work.

Overall, another quality pickup by the Bison. The rich get richer in PL. When you have a quality coach, you get quality recruits.

GO BISON!
New season, new team, new dream . . .

good size but thin, won't overpower or out-quick. very level headed and solid...versatile. If he started for Hurley as a soph I can assure you he defends

So here's a good King Rice story - 2 actually.

When I was a Freshman in high school, our English teacher assigned us a project for those that wanted it - send a survey to one of the USA Today Top 25 high school seniors (via snail mail, it was 1986) and report back on some of their interests - basketball and others. I was assigned a senior out of NY - King Rice. I still have the survey he filled out and mailed back to me.

Fast forward - I'm a grad student and we are playing in the Montana tournament - Flannery's first year. Illinois State was another team in the tourney. At the pre-tournament dinner, each coach introduced their assistants. King Rice would have been about 25, and pretty wide-eyed. I should have said something to him about the survey, but I chickened out - he was still pretty well known after his career at UNC. Maybe I'll get a chance at a Bison game to introduce myself.

Rice will often be playing at the two for the Patrick School this year as well. They return PG Al-Amir Dawes, who has offers from Minnesota, Clemson, Providence, UConn, St. John's, Wichita State, St. Joes, Rutgers, Bona, and a host of others. Rice will be utilizing a new gym and locker room funded by alum Kyrie Irving.

Yes, assuming Sestina is not playing a 5th year - which seems to be almost a 100% certainty.
