NCAA rules permit teams to start practice 42 days prior to their first game, assuming they only practice 5 days a week. Thus the Bison women start practice today, given that their first game is Tuesday November 6th. The men open a day later, which I presume means practice will start tomorrow.

from the Penn board:
We scrimmaged Bucknell today at the Palestra. I wasn't there but here is what I have been able to gather:
We "won" 3 halves. 2 with the starters and last one with reserves playing. 41-37, 40-39, don't know the last score.

For those who don't follow the Ivy, Penn last year went 12-2 in league play and were co-champs. Then they won the Ivy tournament. They return four starters, including 1st team All-Ivy AJ Brodeur, who was a unanimous pick, and 2nd team All-Ivy Ryan Betley.
If that report is accurate, I think it is a good result for the Bison, playing a strong experienced team on their home court. Of course, at the end of the day, results in scrimmages don't mean much.
Edit: I see that Betley reportedly did not play. No word on who played for the Bison.

I enjoyed the In The Herd video. It made me realize that the first game is only a few weeks away.
It was interesting to hear Sestina talk about the evolving offense. With so many prominent seniors graduating last year, I am sure that this will be a work in progress during the OOC schedule.

It looked like Newman wasn’t doing any of the physical practice in the video, instead it was Robertson taking his place in the post drills.

Well deserved for Nate. The coaches obviously recognize his talent, although I imagine there are some fans at other schools who might be surprised by the pick. He has to be the only senior ever picked for the All-PL preseason team without ever having started a game.

Interesting to see Bucknell picked second but with more first-place votes.

Looks like some voters looked at how many stars graduated, while others looked at the ability of the returning players. Having said that, Lehigh appears to have the most talent, as well as the most experience of the top teams. Only injuries or Brett Reed's coaching can stop them from having a very good year.

There was a diverse group of opinions on the Bison. Eight voters picked them for first, which is worth 72 points. The other ten voters gave them a total of 68 points. One way to get to 68 points is to have 8 voters pick them for 3rd (56 points) and 2 voters to vote them fourth (12 points).
I imagine they actually had a few votes for 2nd, which would mean a lot more votes for 4th or even 5th, as well. One wonders if the coaches largely picked them for 1st, while the SID's picked them 3rd or 4th.

There is some major league respect for Bucknell's program! After graduating 3 highly celebrated seniors, the Bison received the most First Place votes, 8-7 over Lehigh. Given that Bucknell finished only 5 points behind the Lehigh, does this mean that somebody picked Bucknell to finish 3rd or 4th?
Also, I am very psyched to see Sestina on the pre-season all PL team. I was wondering if any senior has ever been on the preseason first team without being 2nd all PL the year before. This might be a first. 137, any ideas?

It's happened a lot more often than you might think. A main reason is that often six or more of the ten players on the top two teams are seniors. For example, last year's top two teams had seven seniors. The three non-seniors who made one of those two teams - Rayman, Nelson, and Tejada - all made 1st team this year. But there had to be two others who made it as well. They were Jehyve Floyd, who would have been at least 2nd team last year had the voters only looked at his last 11 games, and Sestina.
Other recent preseason picks who hadn't made either of the top two teams the previous year include Delante Jones (AU) in 2016-17, and both Nick Lindner and Jesse Reed in 2015-16.
The big question to me is whether any player ever made the preseason All-PL team without having ever started a game - which is what Sestina did this year.

137, that is a valid question. I think that Sestina being on the All PL Tournament Team last year carried a lot of weight.

Some of the HC faithful are also questioning Sestina being on the preseason 1st team.
