Mid Major Madness Preview

Predicted finish:

1 Lehigh
2 Boston U
3 Bucknell
4 Holy Cross
5 Colgate
6 American
7 Lafayette
8 Army
9 Navy
10 Loyola

Two comments:

1 All of these previews seem to be ignoring the issue of whether Colgate's 6-10 center Rapolas Ivanauskas, who transferred from Northwestern, will be given immediate eligibility by the NCAA. He could make a big difference if eligible and healthy.

2 I will be very surprised if Army finishes as low as 8th. They return their top three players, and nine of their top ten, from a team that was not as bad as their 8th place league finish. They were ranked 6th out of the 10 PL teams by Pomeroy, Sagarin, and the Massey composite ratings, among others.

American won't be in the top 6. Lafayette is better than 7th returning two of the top freshman from last year.

We'll see, but I think American will be dramatically improved. Last year all of their centers were injured, and they ended up often starting a 6-6 wing at that position. Now they get back Mark Gasperini, a 6-10 PF/C who was one of the league's top three frosh two years ago. Add him to the league's best PG and two good SF's who can score, and there is some talent.

Personally I pick Army for 6th, American for 7th, and Lafayette for 8th. LC has Petrie, who is a great scorer. But they did lose All-PL Matt Klinewski, their best player and only inside presence from last year, plus starter Eric Stafford.

About as tight as you can get.

It’ll be fun watching guys take big steps. I look for Avi to have a monster year but I also think Jimmy Sotos will really shine since we won’t be running the offense the same way. Nate can play from the basket unlike Nana so I think the offense will be be fun to watch and defend.

Did the Colgate player who grabbed Stephen Brown around the neck in the championship game graduate?

No. That would be 6-9 center Dana Batt, who is now a senior. His playing time may drop a lot, however, as Colgate's Malcolm Regisford, their starting center as a soph, may be healthy again. More importantly, I hear that 6-10 transfer Rapolas Ivanauskas, who suffered two different shoulder injuries during his two years at Northwestern, has been granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA. If that is so, he may move into the starting center role and make a big difference in Colgate's post game, assuming he is still the same player he was in high school.
