Newman had minimal minutes. Kimbal is the story tonight. Senior leadership from a guy who had a PL Player of the Year kinda night. Stats don’t lie.

And I hate to reiterate this but the Bonnie’s are an A10 opponent on the road. After massive graduation losers.

I’m delighted.

nice win with a efficient comeback, always tough on the road and the Bonnies are a good test for a first game. Ellis, Newman, and Spear are going to be very good as the season progresses, two guys we good have used tonight Nate Jones and John Meeks but as is always, you play with the guys available, we will play better and that better begins at Sojka on Sat.

It was fun to watch the Bison on the road and fun to get an overtime win. Remember in 2008 Bucknell was down 14 at the half and came back but lost in double overtime? I'm glad they pulled this one out. Kimbal put this team on his shoulders. Bruce didn't score much but when he did they were clutch points and some in overtime. This team is loose, relaxed, and a little swashbuckling but it seemed to work out for them. The freshman Ellis reminds me of a stretched-out and thinned John Azzinaro, and he played well. Funk was thrown in there and will do very well eventually.

I was impressed with Newman's performance tonight. Coach ND said that he is really improved and he showed it tonight.

I was impressed with Newman too. He got off to a shaky start, but ended up with 10 points. Made some nice post moves and drew a few fouls. Now he just has to make FTs.

It was interesting to see him and Sestina on the court together. That combo might work well against bigger teams.

It was interesting to watch the game as Mrs. Bison89 was doing 75mph heading south on I-95. Other than the homer announcers, I really enjoyed the quality of the streaming video on ESPN+. Also, it looked like a big, large crowd. The student body really seems to support their team.

Overall, any road win is a good road win. Beating an A10 team that defeated UCLA in the NCAA tournament last year makes it all that much better even if they did graduate lots of talent. (BTW, so did the Bison!)

Was that a group of high school referees? If not, they should be retrained and start again by refereeing Saturday CYO games at St. Mary's.

I have heard of double fouls before where one player was trying to establish position in the post and the defender was fighting for position, but WTF was that? I have NEVER heard of a CHARGE and BLOCKING double foul. Either it is Charge or a Block!!! Don't get me started on the 3 supposed intentional fouls. They were all BS. CYO reffing time!

Aside from the free throw shooting, that was a good road win. GO BISON!

New season, new team, new dream . . .

Good win? Solid win? Nice win? Sloppy win? Folks this was a great win! A win that any of us would have been happy with last year with a senior-laden line-up. A double digit road underdog at an A10 school. This is a tough crowd to impress, I guess.

And how many moving screens did they call? There seemed to be an offensive foul every other possession.

This is an oddly dismissive comment. No player's performance should be judged by minutes. It's what you do with the minutes you get.

Newman was a true impact player, scored 10 points in 15 minutes, had a key role in the comeback, and demonstrated determined, effective defense against much larger players.

As advertised, his game has improved significantly.

One point nobody has mentioned was the great defense at the end of regulation and in OT. Other than two stupid fouls by Sotos, they made Bona take really tough shots and forced several turnovers.

You're right, the crowd was outstanding. The student sections were largely filled 45 minutes before the tip and they were consistently loud.

Prevailing in that hostile atmosphere made the win all the sweeter and should give the team even more resiliency going forward.

LaPhonso Ellis and his wife were in the stands. ESPN has very nicely assigned him to work the Diamond Head Classic.

Newman's play was crucial in holding the team together for a period midway through the second half when Moore and then Sestina went out for breathers and SBU was threatening to build a huge lead. Here are the Newman references for a 4-minute span where he scored 8 points, grabbed 2 rebounds, and had a block:

13:02 REBOUND OFF by NEWMAN,PAUL
12:59 MISS FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
12:59 GOOD FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
11:58 GOOD FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
11:58 GOOD FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
11:28 BLOCK by NEWMAN,PAUL
11:10 GOOD LAYUP by NEWMAN,PAUL
10:32 GOOD FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
10:15 FOUL by NEWMAN,PAUL
10:03 REBOUND DEF by NEWMAN,PAUL
09:42 MISS FT by NEWMAN,PAUL
09:28 GOOD LAYUP by NEWMAN,PAUL
09:05 FOUL by NEWMAN,PAUL

His FT shooting is obviously a work in progress, but his defense is greatly improved over last season - which is really important on a team with only two centers - and his offensive ability near the rim is also much better than a year ago. This improvement has made the team a lot more competitive.

Paul Newman by necessity played very well after a slow start and will do very well this year. He's just going to get better as the year goes on. He needs to eat some ice cream and Popeyes biscuits but he'll have to use his quickness to his advantage. He actually had lightning speed after he figured out he's better step up his game or he wouldn't see playing time. He's going to hold his own from here on in.

I was very impressed with Newman's play, aside from the free throw shooting. He will certainly be a huge factor in this team's success.

Now that you bring up KMac ( or kimBALL as the Bonnie play by play man called him), we finally got to see the player that was hinted at in the WVU game at the dance 2 years ago. We got glimpses last year, particularly in the Colgate last ;30 second comeback, but his physical condition prevented him from showing the kind of domination that the Press Virginia game suggested. We saw it last night! That Kimbal Mackenzie could be the PL POY.

Newman is getting a lot of grief for his foul shooting. 4-7 isn’t great but was better than Moore’s 2-5 and Toomer’s 2-6.

Apologies to Newman. I wasn't trying to downplay his important contribution. I was praising Kimbal for grabbing the reigns and being the scorer after our graduation losses.
