Yale
Last season: 16-15, 9-5 Ivy League

Coach: James Jones, 20th season

Top players: G Miye Oni, G Trey Phills, F Paul Atkinson

Keep an eye on: Atkinson. The 6-foot-10 forward was ruthlessly efficient as a freshman, scoring 9.2 points per game in just over 24 minutes per game and scoring at nearly a 70 percent clip from the field. A three-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week selection, he hit a last-second lay-up against Penn to lift the Bulldogs to an 80-79 home victory.

The skinny: The Bulldogs took a step back in 2017-18 after reaching the inaugural Ivy League tournament championship game a year prior, but they’ll benefit from an almost complete lack of roster turnover. They also boast a balanced scoring output, with three double-digit scorers returning to the lineup and two others who fell just shy of that mark. Picked to finish third in the conference behind Harvard and Penn, an NCAA berth is within their grasp.

2. Yale Bulldogs
2017-18 season record: 16-15 (9-5)
Credit to the Bulldogs for still managing to have a winning conference record, despite not having two projected starters all of last season. Former Ivy League Player of the Year Makai Mason is now at Baylor but Yale does get back forward Jordan Bruner, who averaged 8.4 ppg and 5.6 rpg as a freshman in 2017. He and rising senior Blake Reynolds will form a great frontcourt for them this season.

While the Bulldogs won’t have their previous Conference Player of the Year, they’ll have one of the favorites to win it this season in Miye Oni. His averages (15.1 ppg, 6.0 rpg, and 3.6 apg) each led the team and he was the key figure in Yale pulling off the nine Ivy wins. The 6’6 wing is an outstanding athlete who still is getting better in the game of basketball.

He’s not the only one coming back, with about 95% of the team’s overall production also returning. Even better, Alex Copeland, Trey Phills and the previously mentioned Reynolds will all be juniors, giving Yale the edge on experience on most opponents. If healthy, the Bulldogs not only will claim one of the four spots but they’ll also be contending for both the regular-season and conference tournament titles with the No. 1 team on the list.

3. Yale Bulldogs, 16-15 (9-5 Ivy)

The Bulldogs need to figure out a way to take some of the burden off of Miye Oni in order to be legitimate contenders this season. The 6’6 swingman has proven capable of taking on heavy workloads, but Yale was overly reliant on its star at times last season. Oni used 27 percent of Yale’s possessions when he was on the court and the offense became predictable. Jordan Bruner‘s return should help. Bruner missed the entire 2017-18 season after suffering an injury in a scrimmage against Boston University. It was a big blow considering Bruner was a force both offensively and defensively as a freshman. His return could be the boost Yale needs to compete with Penn and Harvard at the top of the league standings.

- The Bulldogs were picked to finish third in the Ivy League preseason coaches’ poll. Harvard (which recently beat UConn in a closed-door scrimmage) was tabbed to win the league, followed by Penn. Princeton rounded out the top four.

As usual, Jones doesn’t pay much heed to the preseason “experts.”

“We’ve outkicked our coverage, finished higher in the standings (than picked) in 12 of the last 13 years, something like that,” the 20th-year head coach noted. “I don’t give much thought to the prognosticators. Once you hit the court, you see how good you are.” -

- Bruner, a 6-9 junior, was one of the most highly-touted recruits in program history a few years ago. He’s still shaking off some rust.

“He gets better every day,” said Jones. “He’s had some spectacular moments in practice, but he’s working on being consistent. The speed of the college game, he hasn’t had that in a year or so. He’s just starting to get himself back. My expectation is that before long, he will be back to what he’s capable of.” -
