Zach Taylor, a 6'2" shooting guard from St. Stephens in Austin, Texas has committed to Columbia.

Interesting. He's variously listed as a PG, a combo guard and a shooting guard. Given that we've already taken two wings, my guess is that he is being viewed as a PG for us.

On two different top 100 TX players in his class lists, he was listed, respectively, as # 80 and #69

It's good at last to get someone who is ranked. He is probably going to be a PG understudy, for Smith next year, and presumably Bibbs for a year after that.

Taylor appears to be a very athletic "under the radar" recruit with huge potential. I do agree with Dr. V that our coaching staff is likely viewing Taylor as a potential point guard. Taylor has very little highlight film on on the Internet, but one short film clip does have him making a spectacular pass.

Oh God, here we go again. Another player with 'huge upside.'

Exuberance is not my own style, but hey, dreaming about recruits is like fantasizing about the upcoming season during spring training. If not then, then when?

Too bad he did not play in the Bernandini era. Tippecanoe and Tyler, too.

Silver, thanks for noting that the descriptive phrase "under the radar" does not necessarily mean that a recruit has a high upside. Logically, I always thought otherwise, but maybe you are right.

Tippecanoe was William Henry Harrison, not Zachary Taylor. Taylor was "Old Rough and Ready".

I know. Just trying to get in all of the greatest hits from the 40s, with apologies to Polk.

All you students for the immortal Jim Shenton: It is Tyler, as in Tippecanoe and Tyler too. John Tyler was the VP candidate who succeeded the first Harrison. Zachary Taylor was the 12th president.

Yes, Chet! Yet another nugget of wisdom directly from you: James Shenton from Passaic, NJ (the one & only, Mr. Columbia, no matter what Ungvar's 20/400 vision tells him). Like CU student-athletes Rick Forzani, Paul Kaliades, Stephen Pellino, Gary Raimondo, Gabe Stefaninni & the immortal Chet Forte: all gifts bestowed upon the old school in Morningside Heights by the Garden State. Much more than can be said for more densely populated regions such as Forest Hills, NY which has only given us Arthur Garfunkel and a certain sorry nebbish from Hungary whose real name fortunately escapes me right now.

Paul Simon?

BTW, Trump grew up in Jamaica Estates, not Forest Hills. That's about 4-5 miles down the road, on the other side of St. John's University.

You know Paul Simon's a Queens College boy; and you also know that POTUS (Praise the Lord!) has no Columbia affiliation; though he and several members of his family do have a clear connection with one of the IL member schools- you may have been calling baseball games when he was a member of school's varsity roster.

No broadcasts of Penn baseball. I do not believe he played varsity baseball at Penn. And I am in the class of '78, so no Trump while I was there.

And his daddy bought his way in...and he graduated with no honors, despite his repeated claims to the NY Times that he was graduated 1st in his class.

What kind of person lies about his class standing when it is readily ascertained by the honors records at commencement?

Um, the same kind of person who brags his inauguration was the most well attended ever, when it is readily debunked by publicly available visual evidence?

Yes, and what you and your fine UPenn colleague are writing about does dovetail quite nicely with the world of men's amateur basketball! Once upon time, there was a Jesuit Catholic university in our nation's capital coached by John Thompson, Sr.; and a bedrock principle for Coach Thompson, one that helped him win 600 games was the following: play a relentless full court pressure defense using a dozen or so long, athletic and aggressive AfricanAmerican kids who were never afraid to foul- in fact, those Georgetown teams may have "fouled" on every opponent possession between 1972 and 1999; but a lot of those "fouls" have never appeared in the record books as such. The truth is that people have to survive their everyday lives; and if you wanted to work regularly as a basketball official in the Big East Conference , you couldn't simply go on the court with a zeal for for calling all the fouls against John Thompson's defense. So, in my view, those Thompson teams often got through games with a a significant portion of fouls not being called against them. Similarly, this President looks at every pronouncement as another opportunity to get away with a lie. So he lies, lies and lies some more- just as the officials couldn't keep up with all of the Georgetown fouls, our media watchdogs can hardly keep up with all of POTUS's lies, and are made to look badly if they even attempt to do so. So a good part of the country probably still believes that Barack Obama was born in Kenya and that our President was once the valedictorian at Penn. When a foul was called against John Thompson, he'd act as though he were being picked on; and whenever this President's lie is challenged, you can only be certain that no apology will ever follow.
Foul, foul and foul some more; lie, lie, and lie again- interesting strategies, both (as much as I hate to admit it.)
