You deserve a response from SOMEBODY/ANYBODY for the fine service you provide- thank you for that, and I'd simply like to add the a man of your clout should endeavor to get the once traditional City College of New York game back on the men's basketball schedule, and as the opening game of the season.

Should be a good matchup, with the Lions listed as #214 and Marist as #259 at KenPom.

The game notes are up on the CU site. Starters are Tape, Hunter, Stefanini, Bibbs and Smith.

Assuming that Adlesh is not injured, I really like the idea of Q's coming off the bench. His game reminds me a bit of Vinnie Johnson's of the Pistons of yore who was nicknamed "Microwave." High energy, great shooter.

rbg: Thank you. I appreciate the analytic perspective, but Marist played well the other night against a typically hard-nosed Army team, in a game played at West Point:http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketba ll/recap?gameId=401085972

My only question for you, rbg, is whose projected CU lineup is that? Yours?

The starting lineup is, as we expected, small, but quick. Only Tape is above 6'5". Let's just hope Hunter has acquired some offense. Otherwise, we are from the outset going to be playing 4 against 5.

It's also noteworthy that Ellis isn't starting. Although I assume he will cycle through the lineup, we are going with experience to start.

KP has us losing by 1 away. So if we win, it would be a small bump up.

Hunter averaged 20.9 points per game for a total of 2,250 points in his Florida high school career where he was two time Class 5A High School Player of the Year. He also averaged 6.8 rebounds per game. Even if the competition was not the greatest, anyone who has scored that many points in high school certainly knows how to generate offense. It seems me to that Columbia may have made a mistake the past couple of years trying to convert someone who is clearly a natural forward into a guard. For obvious reasons, that possibility no longer exists. Columbia must use Hunter as a forward. That being the case, there is good reason to believe that Hunter will have an outstanding senior season, to his and the team's great benefit.

Yeah, I know about Hunter's offense in HS. That is why I was always mystified by its disappearance in college. He must have led Columbia in airballs last year, certainly in a per minute basis, and even perhaps absolutely. His defense is good, and he rebounds well, so any uptick in his offense would be a major step forward.

It totally opposite of that. He took mostly mid range and 3's in high school and on the Nike circuit. He hasn't forgotten how to score.
I will say that confidence is a huge thing and having coaches that believe in you makes a difference. He did score in double figures in both scrimmages.

As far as Hunter, he did get some serious minutes last year and is obviously a superior athlete. My impression is that he was one of several players who became gun shy about looking for their shot because they lived in fear of being pulled off the court whenever they missed a shot. That fear of being pulled snowballs into a lack of confidence when a player does get an open look. Of course, in my heyday in the 1950s I never had any such fear.

PS, I am pleased to see Bibbs in the starting lineup. In limited minutes last season before he was injured he looked like a smooth offensive player.

CCSix-six:
Upon further review, I may owe you a better answer than was just submitted, and it's safe enough to state the following: I'm a proponent of the once traditional City College of New York game that for a long time marked the start of the CU's basketball season. In this day and age, the game can be played as part of a doubleheader (CCNY does have a women's team).
It's a good way to generate some good will with our neighbors- something that enough of hasn't been done since even before you were a ColumbiaCollege student. City College benefits greatly in playing both mens and women's division -1 opponents without incurring any travel expenditures. Of course, CU gets something out this arrangement, too- an excellent vehicle for incorporating three new starting players; your lineup congeals perhaps bit faster in a less stressful setting; and if your really going to take your best outside shooter (in fact, one of the best three point shooters in the nation) and bring him into the game as a substitute, this may be a better way of finding out how he responds to such a new routine, having been a starting player for the better part of the last two full seasons- it's probably nice to imagine that you'll be getting a new Vinny Johnson; though you may find out you're actually getting Dr. Vinnie Boombatz (A.K.A., Rodney Dangerfield's longtime physician): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stUZ5Ehfo28

CC: Glad to see the game tonight in Poughkeepsie was much closer than I anticipated, and, admittedly, Mike Smith played a complete game, leading to a stellar performance. There was definitely reason for CU fans to ;eave feeling optimistic about what they saw out there- in fact, I doubt CU's ever had a freshman, playing in his first outing, start and put in 17 points while grabbing 7 rebounds. Hope you enjoyed it, too!

Yes. And with the late Tape injury you alluded to, Eagles was constrained to use both Nweke and Brumant, early and often, and both young men worked wonders with their respective opportunities.

Given we lost our starting center who was replaced by a freshman starting in his first game, losing by 6 is a disappointment but pretty much in line with what KP predicted.

Smith obviously needs more help on offense. Bibbs, Hunter, and Killingsworth didn't contribute much.

Valid point made, but CU went 8-19 last season, lost seven players (one of who is starting at Xavier in Cincy now), and two coaches from that team; and still an 8th player, expected to start last night, was scratched due to a late injury. So: YES, YES, one-thousand times, (sadly) YES.

True, and I feel your pain, Chet. I'd have put tonight's game in the win column if Messrs. Faulds, Hanson and Meisner we're there to take even half the minutes given tononscorers. Still, Bibbs and Hunter were making their first start, and Killingsworth was playing for the first time in a year- do we really know yet that these kids can't score at the D-1 level? But I'm not here to play devil's advocate. I'd prefer to be Mike Smith's advocate; Smith, in fact, saw 4 teammates score in double figures last night. CU shot close to 50% as a team, and Smith, I believe, facilitated the stat coming into being by showing up in distribution mode. And it behooves Smith to prep in the manner from this day forward; not only for the good of the team; not just because his teammates may appreciate his trusting them; but, primarily, because it's a better look for Smith in the beholding eye of European scouts and other potential employers who may have developed reservations about Smith similar to those festering in me. In any event, I believe there's more reason for the Morningside faithful to feel good about the events in Poughkeepsie than not.

Fair enough. And not having Tape hurt. But we are a small team right now and IMHO that is going to require more minutes in the front court from Nweke and Brumant, both of whom look like they can contribute.

Perhaps we should start Tape, Nweke, Brumant,Steffanini, and Smith? It leaves us thin on backups up front, but that might be our biggest and best lineup.

You are proposing an interesting tall, line-up that might well be our best line-up overall, or at least against certain opponents. However, given that we have only played one game, it seems obvious that neither the coaching staff nor fans like ourselves have seen enough to make any definitive statements about who should get playing time and when. Also, we don't even know what is going on yet with Tape's injury, Davis' absence, Ellis' readiness, etc. etc. Finally, is the roster really set, or has Engles reached out for assistance to the football team to add some depth up front? There seem to be a couple of big upperclassman on the football team who played football as well in high school.

Other thing to keep in mind is whether playing 3 bigs at once makes it harder to manage fouls, etc., to keep 2 on the floor at once. In other words, you may need to bring Brumant off the bench in order to effectively spell the other 2.

Since we're very thin up front, we can't afford to start all three bigs as even splitting the two up-from positions into three means that each would have to be ready to play 27 minutes, which is a lot given that many bigs get into foul trouble etc.

Also, regardless of who starts, the Lions will need some production from the bench so it's more of an eight to ten man rotation thing than a starting line-up matter. So despite the several positives from the Marist game, Columbia will certainly need to find another two or three prolific scorers.

Int:
Quinton was solid last night; appearing to accept what must be viewed as a demotion like the champ, good character, team-first individual he is. Still, he played more minutes than Bibbs & Hunter combined; managed to hit a couple of 3s and score in double figures.
Re, RandyBrumant- Last night Randy played 21 minutes-accumulating 11 points, 6 rbs., 2 steals & 1 assist. ALL of last season (in games against D-1 opponents), Randy played 21 minutes, scored 2 points & grabbed- 1 rebound-that's it! My (perhaps incorrect) thought is that, for the time being, last night may have provided enough of a confidence boost & elevation in Randy's status with the team.
Re, Ike Nweke- This kid was a revelation because he did not defer to the upperclassmen! When he got the ball in scoring position against Marist, Nweke took the ball to the hoop, and usually made the basket or got fouled and made his free throws. Patrick's a nice kid, and a fine athlete, but perhaps a tad too deferential in his interplay with Smith. You simply can't pass up good shot attempts when you're out there with Smith- you then just lose his respect and may not see the ball again in a a good shooting spot for another month. Nweke put in 17 points last night- Patrick's never come close to doing that in 2 years; and the nine rebounds Nweke secured is a total that Tape's matched only twice & exceeded once (10 rbs. being Tape's career high). Hate to hear about Pat's injury status; but Nweke's now earned his place on the court till he proves otherwise.
Re, Hunter, Bibbs & Killingsworth. We desperately need more information from these guys before writing them off. Combined, this threesome took only 4 shots against Marist, though they totalled forty man-minutes- perhaps three more player examples of too much subservience to Smith. Bibbs and Hunter are both long and athletic, and capable of contributing even when they're not shooting. And Killingsworth, last night, saw 15 minutes of action for the first time since March, 2017. Note, too, that, as a freshman 2 years ago, Killingsworth notched 17 points against St. Joseph's of Philly (on 6 of 9 shooting) and 14 against Brown (5 of 10)- that may not qualify as the "prolific" scoring 37P6 seems to demand, but it can't hurt.
Re, Peter Barba- this is a kid who's worked extremely hard in his 3 plus years at CU. Given some long range opportunities, Peter will make his share.
An interesting slice of 60s nostalgia was put out there by 37P6 via the football/basketball combo player idea. However, to get help, one must realize they require it and are willing to request it; that doesn't sound like the CU basketball coach to me- he's too proud, and Al Bagnoli's too territorially-inclined and, at the moment, possesses too much leverage to ever allow for such utilization of any of his prize recruits. But beyond any of this fantasizing- simply given the competitive cauldron essence defining Columbia College & SEAS today, it would, I think, be academic suicide for any full time undergraduate to be seriously playing and/or practicing these two sports from late July and consistently so into March of the following year.

With a number of offensive talents, the points should continue to be there for Columbia. The defense, however, is a much bigger concern.

Marist, which entered at #259, shot 42.9% (12-28) from three and 58.6% (17-29) from two. They also outrebounded the Lions 39-32.

Of course, it was only one game, but this is a smaller team than last year's team that had its difficulties on the defensive end.

More good stuff f/AntiU--I do agree, with one point of clarification, namely, that I was in no way suggesting that any Columbia player switch sports, or even double up in two sports. I just thought there might be one or two big senior linemen with high school basketball experience who might want to play a little roundball after the football season ends next Saturday. I'm just concerned about our depth up front if one of our three bigs incurs a serious injury.

Incidentally, Verbal Commits is now showing Zach Taylor as a Columbia commit at the shooting guard position, but as was mentioned on this website last week, Taylor probably should be considered a "combo" guard or point guard. More importantly ,however, the incoming class is starting to shape up nicely with some promising players, three of whom have already committed. At least one other very promising player seems very likely to Columbia. That probably still leaves two more spots open + our known transfer center.

As per usual, you offer a lot of unbiased, unvarnished factual information. But I'd like for you, KP, CC66, Palestra38 and all of the other analytics affectionados out here to give this Marist team some real credit, too. By the time Columbia arrived in Poughkeepsie yesterday, Marist had already played its first game- last Tuesday night, against the tough Cadets at West Point. It doesn't matter that Bobby Knight's not their coach; nor that Mike Krzyzewski doesn't play for them anymore- Army teams always have tough-minded kids on the floor and on their bench; in fact, just this afternoon, West Point played Duke to basically a first half standstill in Durham. That Marist v. Army game last Tuesday was decided by a West Point made 3 at the buzzer; and if I were to ask which was the more prepared team last night - the home team, having been just been pushed to the max by West Point or the visitors team, playing their first game, while having to incorporate 4 new starters into a lineup that won barely a third of its games last season - you'd come up with the same answer as I did. And while you deride Columbia for allowing Marist to shoot 58% inside the arc and for losing the rebounding battle to West Point by 7, please note that these same Marist kids shot 65% from inside the arc at Army , and also outrebounded the Cadets by 8. Bottom line, for me: the Red Foxes ain't too shabby- analytics or no analtics!

Thanks, AntiUngvar, for your thoughtful post.

I completely agree with you that Marist is playing better than their objective ranking. I guess I was really focused on the three pointers, watching last night's game. With so many open looks, they could have certainly made more than the 12 they actually hit. In the game against Army, however, they were only 2 of 15.

Even with a solid player like Tape and a potential star in Nweke, the Lions are probably too thin in the front court to outrebound opponents or shut down the two point shooting on a consistent basis. Even with a couple of inexperienced starters, they need to improve their three point defense if they want to get into the league's top four. I had hoped that Marist would have been a team for the Lions to get some good outside stops and gain some confidence heading into next weekend's tournament.

In the end, I was just surprised that almost all of last night's comments were focused on the team's offense and the defense did not seem to be addressed.

I guess we can all save quite a bit of time, money and effort by paying not a bit of attention to any of these events, and just asking KP about what just happened and what will happen next. In fact, I'm starting to think that KP must have been the guy who led you to believe that there was "not a chance" the Dartmouth at Princeton football game of November 3 could possibly conclude as a low scoring event; and you, of course, believed him- until just the opposite took place.

KP generally represents a reasonably fair estimate of probabilities. That doesn't mean an outcome never falls on the margins of the bell curve, nor in this instance, does it account for the absence of our starting center. In this circumstance, if Columbia drops four KPs, and Marist gains 9, the consequences of such a game are quite predictable.

Feel badly stating the obvious, but, at least for one night, the absence of the starting center turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the blue.

I have some real news for you, 37P6, and I just hope you're in a comfortable, seated position to absorb the following: If you have the cojones to attend the next men's basketball game (Friday evening, Nov. 16, 2018, 8:30pm, at Fordham University's Rose Hill Gymnasium), don't be surprised to be met immediately upon your entry to the gym by Ungvar, with CU uniform in hand, and having him beseech you to suit up for the Blues that evening.
Better still, Chet's forever reminding us of his still usable NCAA eligibility; in fact, he missed Columbia's game played at that same Rose Hill Gymnasium during his junior undergraduate year. Believe it or not, that game was played on February 29th, 1956,with Fordham beating a Forte-less Columbia squad, 81-68. So Chet can now make up for that gap in his resume by dressing for Friday' game, and then for Saturday's game; and yet again for Sunday's game! You read that right: something truly unprecedented in the one-hundred and twenty year history of the Columbia men's basketball is about to take place in The Bronx- the Columbia team will play and complete THREE regular season games in a span of approximately forty-six hours: the CU games scheduled to tip off Friday, 8:30pm; Saturday, 6pm and Sunday at 5pm! Never happened before- Jack Rohan's NCAA tournament team played three games as part of the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden in late December, 1967, but those games were spread out over a five day period. This round robin tournament at Fordham also includes the host school, and Youngstown State and Florida International.
Chet's probably got a point when he writes that CU can't win D-1 games without players who can score at the D-1 level. But CU won't even be able to play the damn games without bodies of some/any kind! No better way I can think of for Chet to honor his alma mater than to lace em up one final time, this forthcoming weekend. When you think about it, that Fordham game of 1956, played on February 29- a date we've only seen 15 times then; so Chet will be made to feel that he's practically going back to just yesterday!
Don't want to ask KP what will happen in The Bronx next weekend; but I believe the Lions will sleep in their own beds between games and acquit themselves honorably on the court. Only sure things are that this will serve as excellent preparation for them to play the six Ivy back-to-backs and that the University will have to rely on its reinforcement unit- so, 37P6, do bring your Chuck Taylors and have your jock strap ready, and consider yourself having been duly warned!

Yes, as was generally the case last year, Columbia played well enough to win on offense. Having a little more scoring depth would help of course, but the issue is Defense, Defense, Defense.

Dear anti-Ungvar,
I was never much on defense, not even at my beloved Hackensack High. While I would be willing at my advanced stage to lace them up again, I’m not sure how my two handed set shot would fare these days.

Chet:
Pay no mind to that SomeGuy globalist, singing his same tired old refrain, which he's now repeated on our thread, by my count, some 37 times- last season is over! We live for the present moment- a philosophy which permits a twenty year old corpse to look as good as you do in the first place. Besides, you were the guy who just wrote something about CU needing D-1 scorers to play in D-1 games. All I know is that you scored nearly 2,000 D-1 points, without the benefit of a three point shot or the opportunity to stand on SomeGuy's head while performing a layup- that's really saying something! And not to repeat myself, at risk of sounding like SomeGuy, but you did miss that last Fordham game on Feb. 29, 1956, causing us to lose to those weird Jesuits (yes, exactly, Bret Kavanaugh's people), 81-68. You clearly owe us one Chet, and here's the perfect chance for you to make it up to CU; an show the current generation why you once were NCAA's Player of the Year.
By the way, the reasons you failed to show up at Fordham in '56 seem pretty suspicious, if you asked me: one story had it that you owed Jack Molinas some serious money, and Coach Rossini thought it would behoove you to stay away from Little Italy in The Bronx, at least until you graduated. The other story, which Spectator went with, was that you were perfectly exhausted from staying up in your dorm room the night before the game, crafting and perfecting your very first 1000--word Internet post, which was titled:
"I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE, AND IT IS MIKE SMITH!!!!"
What's the real story with that Fordham game, Chet, and will do the right thing and dress for us there on Sunday?

I never liked the gym at Rose Hill. But here is the real story. I actually was kidnapped by a group of monks who took me to Arthur Avenue and stuffed me with Zappa da Pesci.

"Zappa da Pesci," is a fish soup, which raises the following question to AntiU, Chet Forte and anyone else that cares to respond: What fish starred in the Godfather Book and Movie? A. Tuna; B. Shark; C. Bass; D. Salmon; E. Luca; F. Whitefish. G. Unknown.

Backup Question: Who was the player that Lou Rossini went to Hackensack, NJ High School to Recruit: for Columbia: A. Chet Forte; B. Frank Thomas; C. Michael Corleone; D. Wilt Chamberlain; E. Jack Rohan; F. Charlie Brown, Sr.?
