Fairfield lost big at top 20 Purdue Tuesday night. However the final score was a bit misleading as the Stags were down by only 16 with about 5:30 left.
Fairfield is the U.N. of D1 programs, with two players from Sweden, plus ones from Lithuania, Congo, Serbia, Tunisia, and Egypt. Plus two from Puerto Rico. Their leading scorer in Game 1 was a freshman from Puerto Rico via Miami, who reportedly had offers from GA Tech, Virginia, Wichita State, UMass, and some others.
Pomeroy has the Bison as a 6-point favorite.

I can only guess, but I don't think Massey puts in any work at all in trying to project the current season. They mostly just use a weighted average of the past few years. Pomeroy, in contrast, looks a lot at how many minutes, points, rebounds, etc were lost by each team - but then also factors in a team's basketball tradition.
I don't particularly like any computer ratings this early in the year, but I think Massey is a joke. It won't mean much until after exams.

Jones is warming up; Meeks still in a boot, Sestina also in a boot with what Birdsong called some sort of stress injury.

Lucky to be as close as we are. How can the foul shooting be so bad? Make a few more and we would be much closer despite how bad we played.

Shooting from anywhere on the court has been dreadful, but 3-pointers and FT’s are pathetic. Even with the injuries we should be up in this game.

17 offensive rebounds is an impressive stat. Just couldn’t convert enough of the second chance opportunities we had. Free throw shooting will improve but it was a killer tonight

They fought back but couldn’t get enough shots to fall. This is still a work in progress. Especially without Sestina. It’s only the second game. no reason to panic.

Some take away from this game
1- We we’re out of sync for the majority of the game. A lot of shots were rimming out earlier for us but dropping for them.
2- Not meaning to pick on him, but Sotos had his share of mistakes that cost us. Overall a great player, but this wasn’t his night.
3- Newman has improved 1000 percent since last season - overall a very good game for him. If he continues to play this way when Sestina get back, these two could prove to be a great combo once the PL season starts. A lot of his shots were just off the madam by a hair. For me, the biggest surprise of the night.
4- While not a great team, give Fairfield their due - good at the line and with their 3 pointers - that is what won it for them.

Coach David was very upset that bucknell was not given a timeout after Fairfield scored. He said that himself and three players were trying to signal for a timeout. I definitely noticed Kimbal trying to call one.

The officiating is a joke. Stop with all the replays! Just make the call and we'll all live with it, like we always did.

I like just off the madam by a hair a lot better. And they were! It was frustrating seeing our shots rim out and theirs were falling. I think we lost because of the turnovers and foul shooting although I did not see the stats. Also, this team seems to be risk-takers as opposed to finishers. Both games so far were exciting, but I hope they're all not buzzer beaters.

All good points. Newman was definitely the silver lining in this loss. 35 minutes, 12 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks, 1 steal, 4-6 FTs. He missed a few layups, but played good D and got the Fairfield bigs in foul trouble just like at Bona.
Sotos has 12 turnovers in 2 games which isn't going to cut it. He tries to make too many highlight real plays and gets himself in trouble. Reminds me of Kaspar's early career.
Robertson also had a good game. Like Sotos, made some mistakes at both ends but was solid overall with 8 points, 7 rebounds.
The stats for the rest of the team speak for themselves. 34% FG, 24% 3FG, & 59% FT will not win many games regardless of the opponent. Fairfield shot 60.9% FG, 62.5% 3fg in the 1st half, but we shut them down in the 2nd half.
I bet we'll see a lot more defensive intensity and more consistent offense against Canisius.

Can somebody please explain this "hook and hold" rule? What is it, 5 in two games? If you're calling it that often maybe it's not a good rule change.

Toomer (2-10 I think) is pulling the average down, but rest of the team has not been stellar. Last year's team struggled early in the season too. Luckily, they improved with the exception of Nana.

Davis kept saying they need to do a better job on defense, and certainly some possessions were poor in that area, Fairfield scored 60 points, which isn’t a bad total to allow. For me, the bigger issue is offensive flow and what are good shots. I’d rather a wide open perimeter shot than a crazy drive with no idea what you will do with it. I wouldn’t mind seeing Ellis a bit more. He looks pretty smooth and I think he can help offensively, especially with a bit more experience and confidence.

Taking the long view ( and this does not obscure the fact that this is the most frustrating game I ever watched), we were missing 3 key players, started ice cold while they were red hot, missed a ton of foul shots, never really got untracked and still lost by a basket. This game will help us down the road.
