Making a statement? Good for them if so. This is a disgrace. They deserve answers. Where is all the money going??

Not at all.
The Band is giving its students a break during a 9 day stretch with 5 performances (including Homecoming, which is an 7 hour bonanza for us, two home basketball games, an away football game, and an elementary school assembly). And even then, I’m pretty confident many of our students are glued to their speakers and twitter feeds keeping track of the game. Its a challenging schedule for a group of studious volunteers. For us, this is about time management and student wellness - our campus partners have been very supportive.
We’ll see you Thursday.

And in fairness, if you have to take a night off, this was a good one; obviously they didn't need too much support.

I suppose, but I cannot remember any time in 40 years that a Penn band didn't show for a mid-semester game.

On November 10th, AJ tweeted the following about the band and cheerleading squad:
- So @pennathletics sold out Palestra floor, I was part of huge successful fundraising campaign, yet there are budget cuts not allowing @penncheer and @PennBand to stay in hotels on our league games. Only reason band can go is they make own accommodations. Where’s the money going? -
The DP looked into the funding and travel schedules for both group's in today's paper.

And now we are back to lousy canned music & some person with a mic trying to tell us to cheer contests. AD must think she's at Pizziaola instead of the Palestra.

So where, indeed, does all of that money go?
Follow the money. That's usually a good strategy.

A DP writer pens an Op-Ed to ask the University to pay the band members or increase their funding so it is easier for them to attend games.

As someone who broadcast the games on XPN in my time, I have seen this over and over. The University does not see in its mission student participation in athletic team affiliation---thus, they allowed XPN management to greatly curtail sports broadcasting and eventually phased out all student participation in it, despite the fairly large number of people who went on to successful careers in broadcasting (not to mention the benefits of any kind of public speech or broadcast engineering experience). They did away with the student who played the Quaker---and everyone knew him---in favor of that moldy costume inside of which is an anonymous person. They allowed Jerome Allen to cut way back on DP reporters' communications with players (insisting that they go through athletic department channels and then being fairly unresponsive). They cut back on the bands (both football--remember the Marching (a joke) 101? and basketball) and now don't even want to fully fund cheerleading and travelling costs for the band.
And you wonder why no students come out for the games? Not only did we go through 10 years of terrible ball, they make ZERO effort to get students involved who are not already athletes. It's a real Division 3 approach.

I seem to remember that XPN was run by students and volunteers up until the mid 1980s (1986?) and then it quickly switched over to having professional DJs and program directors. I thought students still did things like the hourly news update and sports after the change, but they were eventually fazed out.
P38, do you remember when and how the changes happened to XPN?

Yes, it really all began with the infamous "Vegetable Report" (having nothing at all to do with sports) in which two hippie non-students doing a wacky call in show asked outrageous sex questions to a kid and someone complained to the FCC. That was in 1975. The University suddenly became concerned that there was zero oversight on a station which license was held by the University. They appointed a faculty advisor who asked station management for a plan to ensure it didn't happen again. Apart from getting rid of the non-students, the major effect of the "WXPN Manifesto" (actual name) which was issued was to terminate sports broadcasting as not being "within the mission" of the station. We fought back and the University mandated coverage of basketball and football (but soccer and hockey, with a few exceptions, were cut). The FCC investigation went on, however and eventually, the University appointed a permanent professional station manager. Students continued to call games into the 1980s (I think Brian Seltzer was the last student to do so as he was hired afterwards) but they were phased out and minor sports, which were carried on the local carrier station wired to the dorms (WQHS) ended when that technology breathed its last gasps. The station itself morphed from primarily a jazz station, with country and world music shows and experimental music late at night, to a typical indy-rock format which really doesn't represent any student constituency....not a bad station, but not a student station...run by professionals as an NPR affiliate.

Thanks for the info.
I agree that the station is still better than most, but nothing like it was in the past and certainly not directed to the students.

As a fellow XPN alum, all I can say is this (and D-1 hockey) are the reasons the Penn Fund never sees a penny from me (although the Basketball find does.)

My recollection is that it was somewhere around 1998 that the students stopped doing basketball pxp on WXPN, and a professional broadcaster took over the pxp duties with a student providing the color commentary.
In 1996-97, while the students were calling the games on XPN, Dan Baker, Scott Graham and Stan Pawlak were calling some of the key games (Princeton, Big 5, Fiesta Bowl Classic, etc.,) on WPHT.
Adam Hertzog and Vince Curran called some of the key games in 1997-98 on the College Sports Network, before Adam started calling the games with a student on XPN (November 1998?). That format of Adam and a student broadcaster continued into this century, although Vince Curran provided the commentary with Adam for the non-XPN broadcasts (pennathletics.com, WVCH, etc.,) in the early 2000s.
When Adam left after the 2004-05 season, Brian Seltzer took over the pxp with Vince Curran as his broadcast partner. From the time Brian graduated and became the pxp guy, there have been two professionals doing the broadcasts.
It was also around 1998 that WXPN stopped carrying the Penn football games.

Hey all,
As another fellow XPN alum (though short tenored only joining my senior year 00-01 and doing a little year before in my junior year 99-00). That during that time period it was Adam Hertzog doing pbp and students doing color, halftime stats, and any pre-recorded halftime spots. Students got to cover the women’s games for the web audio broadcasts as well.
I was pretty bummed they stopped that also after I graduated - even though my time was short lived, it was a fantastic experience and a lot of fun.
