A couple of interesting games:

1. Radford, coached by Nate Jones' Dad Mike Jones, beat Notre Dame in South Bend.

2. Villanova was beaten at home by almost 30 points by Michigan.

Don't know how many of you saw this play from a D3 game in Mass last night:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbFplM7eYVA

The perp has been thrown off the team and banned from campus. Police are investigating possible criminal charges.

I think that he should be banned from the NCAA for at least one year if not for life. There is no place for that in sports.

Northeastern beat Alabama by 15 points today on a neutral court despite their second best player being out with an injury. Previously they beat Ivy favorite Harvard by ten points on the road. And, scarily, they lost to Boston U in their opener.

Northeastern was a near-unanimous pick for 1st in the CAA preseason poll, as they return all of their starters from the team that won the CAA regular season title last year.

In terms of depth top to bottom, I think this Bison OOC schedule is the toughest they have ever played. Too tough if Sestina isn't back soon.

St. Bonaventure beat Siena 82-40 tonight. Siena in its previous game had beaten Harvard. Courtney Stockard is back for the Bonnies, but res could have played his minutes tonight and Bona still would have easily won.

Meanwhile Monmouth lost again - a tough 2-point loss on the road to a pretty good Hofstra team. Gave up a traditional 3-point play with 15 seconds left, and then missed a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer.

Vermont came back from 10 down in the 2nd half to beat Ivy pre-season favorite Harvard 70-65. Anthony Lamb had 37 points despite missing four FTs late in the game. Makes what the Bison did to him all the more impressive.

I happened to see a little blurb that other night that Arizona won its 52nd straight home non-conference game. They didn't mention who their last loss was against, but I'll bet most Bison fans can guess.

That sounds about right. We'll do well to keep the margin under 20. ESPN gives us an 8.8% chance of winning.

The way the Pomeroy model works, I don't think it will any effect, positive or negative. Everything gained by today's Vermont win is exactly offset by today's Northeastern loss, if I understand Pomeroy correctly.

Vermont has won 5 straight since their loss to Bucknell. Their other two losses were @Kansas and @Louisville.

If it's any consolation, both teams shot poorly from the FT line. NE could have made it interesting if they'd made a few more. Vermont was only 3-18 from 3 but scored enough inside to make up for it. Northeastern did not look like the team that played here.

Vermont is struggling at home vs. St. Bona. Bona made their 1st six FG while UVM missed their 1st nine 3 pt FG. Anthony Lamb has 25 of UVM's 33 pts early in the 2nd half. Ernie Duncan is out with an injury and nobody else seems capable of scoring.

Not the most daring prediction, but very accurate. OSU ends up with a 75-56 win.

Vermont and Bona in OT.

Edit: Vermont wins in two OT's. UVM missing Ernie and Everett Duncan, plus center Ryan Davis. Bona missing two important players, including Griffin, who was injured near the end of their game with the Bison.

Lamb had 42 tonight. Also has scored 24 vs Kansas, 25 vs Louisville, 34 vs Yale, and 37 vs Harvard. In fact, he really has had only one poor offensive game all year, when he went 2-14 against some team from Central PA.

Bucknell, St. Bonaventure, Northeastern, and Vermont have all played each other this year. Interestingly, the A-10 team was 0-3 while the other three were 2-1. In Bonaventure's defense, two losses were in OT and 2OT. Their leading scorer also missed the Bucknell game.

A stunner by Princeton today. After losing to Lehigh by 15 in November, and squeaking by Lafayette by 2 last Friday in Easton, the previously 9 and 7 Tigers stun # 17 Arizona State today 67-66 in Tempe. This just one week after the Sun Devils knocked off then #1 Kansas.

So it's now easy to prove Lehigh is better than Kansas.

Btw Pomeroy was not as high on Arizona State as the polls, ranking them 43rd going into the game (now #50). He had Princeton as a 15-point underdog. Along with the games you mention, Princeton had also lost to Duke 101-50 less than two weeks ago.

Penn was 10-3 including wins over Miami and Nova. But they lost badly to Toledo in their last game on Saturday. Still, a nice way for Monmouth to pick up their 1st win.

Penn's best player AJ Brodeur was 0-5 from the FT line in OT.

A quick look at how some of the Bison OOC opponents have been doing:

1 Bona beat St. Joes by almost 30 points last night, taking an amazing 39-12 lead at halftime. Prior to that, they had been playing poorly.

2. Fairfield, after dropping its first two MAAC games, beat both St. Peter's and Niagara this week to move up in the standings.

3. Canisius opened its MAAC schedule with road wins over Marist and Siena before dropping an OT decision to Brown.

4. Vermont since Christmas has crushed Dartmouth, Albany, and Maine. They have jumped from 118th to 82nd in the Pomeroy rankings.

5. Northeastern has been up-and-down. Beat Bona and Drexel in late December, then lost to Delaware and a good Hofstra team before topping Elon tonight on the road.

6. Monmouth, since its shocking win over Penn in the Palestra, has opened 1-2 in the MAAC. They lost a painful double OT game at Quinnipiac tonight.

7. La Salle had won three in a row, including a road win over UMass, but then lost by 6 points at VCU.

8. Ohio State won three OOC games in late December, but then dropped games to a very strong Michigan State team and then on the road to a decent Rutgers squad in a game where OSU was a 5-point favorite.

9. St. Mary's beat San Jose and BYU, but lost on the road to San Fran., who is now #43 in the Pomeroy rankings.

10. URI opened with two road A10 games, losing at St. Louis and then beating Richmond.

11. TCU opened B12 play with a win over a good Baylor team, then lost by 9 at Kansas. They have moved up to 25th in the AP poll.

12. UNLV opened up with three consecutive wins in the MWC, but have yet to play any of the top teams. Beating New Mexico on the road was a good win however.

After losing to UMBC on Wednesday, Vermont leads 1st place Stony Brook on the road by 17 in the 2nd half. Anthony Lamb has missed both games with a concussion.

Is there a better coach anywhere than Jay Wright? Despite the unexpected loss of Spellman and DiVincenzo to the draft, the Cats are 19-4, undefeated in the Big East, and riding an eleven game win streak. This might be his best coaching job yet.

bison75, as a Nova fan since I was around 14-15 years old, I could not agree more. I have no idea of how they will perform in the BE Tournament or NCAA Tournament, but overall, I have been pleasantly surprised. He recruits quality players who buy into his system. I hope that he is Nova Head Coach until he retires unless of course, he wants to return to Lewisburg!

I don't think it's a coincidence that Jay and Dabo Swinney have combined to win 4 of the last 6 championships in their sports. In an era where players expect more from a coach, both have been able to build cultures where the player-coach relationship is a two-way street. It's refreshing to watch both interact with their players. Early attrition may make it harder for Villanova to maintain its elite status nationally, but I agree, Jay is one of the best in the business.

Monmouth has moved into 1st place in the MAAC with an 8-4 record. Pretty impressive, given that they started the season 0-12 before upsetting Penn just before league play started.

Canisius is tied for 2nd at 7-4.

Vermont has gone 15-2 since losing at home to the Bison.

Northeastern is in 2nd place in the CAA with an 8-3 league record.

La Salle has won four A-10 games in a row to move to 5-4 in league play. Not bad after starting the season 0-9.

Bona has been up-and-down, but got a good road win the other night at Duquesne to move to 5-4 in A-10 play.

Included in that Northeastern 8-3 record is the win vs Hofstra last week which snapped the Prides longest in the nation 16 game winning streak. Hofstra had defeated Northeastern in the team’s earlier meeting.

Like the Bison, Nova hit a bad patch losing 4 of 5, all 4 losses on the road. They turned it around to beat #10 Marquette at home last night. Let's hope both teams have one last run in them.

Here's a "crowd" that makes those at Colgate, American, or Boston U look huge:

https://twitter.com/happeninghoops/status /11012984...

It's Chicago State, who claims to be averaging 400 a game but realistically looks to be drawing more like 40 (at least in this game). What makes it worse is the massive size of their arena - listed capacity of 5500.

Two things: (1) Bucknell does not have many graduate programs; and (2) Bucknell administration has made it VERY difficult for an athlete to compete in a fifth year. Some have tried and failed to get permission. Bucknell administration is far less cooperative than the administration at other PL schools.

Note that once Bucknell committed four scholarships for next year, there was no longer any way he could have come back. But that ship had sailed awhile ago anyway.

JC Show had 30 points over the weekend for Bing. They have had another bad year, although JC has done pretty well. He has played the two almost exclusively. In his past five games, he has hit 28-47 on threes.

I haven't read the twitter stream, but I'd take it with a grain or two of salt. At best, it's very premature. At worst, it's wishful thinking. I'm not saying it might not happen; there are reasons on both sides that make it potentially a good fit; but I doubt any decisions have yet been made.

Personally, if I was in his position, I would shoot for the best academic school that also plays a competitive schedule.

That is exactly what it is, a rumor, & a bad one at that... there is no chance of Nate playing his 5th yr at St Bonaventure. If he were to use his last yr of eligibility, it will be at a power 5 school not an A10 school. I assure you that was never even a thought

I watched some of that game. With only 6:30 left to go in the first half, Mason led 12-8. There was plenty of defense, but it was still the most inept offensive showing I can remember in a long, long time. Unforced turnovers (plenty of forced ones, too) and open look jumpers from near and far clanging off rims not including the ones that missed rims altogether. Mason still led with a couple of minutes to go, and then the bottom completely fell out. VCU has really ramped it up in the last month and a half. Now up to 32 in kempom. VCU can be absolutely stifling.

From the quotes I saw, Paulsen laid it in the players' laps.

The first conference tournament one seed lost last night when Gardner-Webb beat Campbell in the Big South. That means Radford gets to host the title game against 4 seed Gardner-Webb Sunday at 1:00.

Vermont led Binghamton 52-22 at halftime and opened the 2nd half on a 10-0 run. No cinderella story for Binghamton. Steph Smith has 28 points on 10-11 and 8-9 3FG. It's bad when your team is outscored by a single player.

A couple of the above lost to Bison OOC opponents. St. Mary's took down Gonzaga by 13 points, and Northeastern beat Hofstra by 8 points after leading by 16 at the half.

Unfortunately Radford, coached by Nate Jones' Dad Mike, lost in the Big South finals to Gardner-Webb. Radford tied for the regular season title with Campbell but ended up with the 2nd seed on the tiebreaker.

It's fairly easy this year to prove the Bison are better than the top teams in the nation. For example, against hated Duke:

- Bucknell beat St Bonaventure 88-85
- St Bonaventure beat St Joseph's PA 73-47
- St Joseph's PA beat Old Dominion 79-64
- Old Dominion beat Syracuse 68 -62
- Syracuse beat Duke 95-9 1

By my count, that makes BU 54 points better than Duke - although the Bison might not beat them by quite so much on the court.
