St. Mary’s played with passion and grit in that game. They knew they weren’t on the bubble and earned it. Good for them.

Just watched them get a Police and Fire Escort with Lights and sirens through town back to campus, here in Moraga. Hopefully the Bison can get the same tomorrow...

I wonder if they will approach Matt Langel, who has deep Philly roots.

Wow! The guy gives them 34 years and they can’t even pretend that he resigned and give him a graceful exit. No class!

Watching Phil over the years, I think it more likely that the school offered him that option and he refused.

Yes, that wouldn't surprise me at all.

Major turnover in the Big 5. Fran Dunphy is out at Temple after this season. Call it a retirement, but many people feel that he was forced out. Aaron McKie will be Temple's new HC following this season. I was just texting with a fellow Bucknellian who thinks that Dunphy would be a good fit at St. Joe's. Personally, I think that it is time for St. Joe's to look for a younger, highly motivated coach.

Same story played out last week at William & Mary. Long-time coach Tony Shaver, the most successful coach in program history, was surprisingly let go by a new AD after a mediocre season.

So far, the only names I've heard mentioned are Jamion Christian, Davis and Jameer Nelson. I'm sure plenty more will be coming down the pipeline at any time.

No idea why any school would prefer Davis over Langel at this point. Langel's track record to date is surely more impressive.

That possibility occurred to me after I made the post, res. If that’s the case than they did the best they could by saying nice things in the press release.

Yes, Phil is old school and cantankerous, perhaps that's redundant. I can easily see the AD and whoever else coming to Phil and saying, "Phil, it's time. Thanks ever so much for what you've done, we're paying off your contract and we're going to have a nice send off party. Don't worry, we'll say it was your idea, you've got so much else you want to do that you've never had time for, etc."
And I can see Phil responding, "Screw you. I'm not quitting or retiring. You want to fire me, go right ahead."
I used to absolutely despise Phil, then I acquired a grudging respect for him while still disliking him. That was followed by a still grudging respect but no real animosity. Now, I will miss him. He always stood up publicly for what he thought was right.

Wasn’t Martelli a jerk in the O’Brien situation?

Yes. He apparently was miffed because O'Brien decided to graduate and transfer - even though Martelli had recruited a couple young bigs who had taken all of TOB's minutes. Martelli also had brought in a transfer center who figured to play big minutes that year. Thus O'Brien went from a starter his first year of eligibility at SJU (2009-10) to a benchwarmer who rarely played the next year(2010-11).
Martelli then gave O'Brien permission to talk to potential landing spots following the 2011 season, and he gave those schools permission to talk to O'Brien. Thus all parties believed there would be no issue in getting the necessary waiver signed by Martelli to allow TOB to play. But after O'Brien signed with UAB to enter one of their graduate programs, suddenly Martelli refused to sign the waiver. He got a lot of bad press for his actions, but he refused to do the right thing. Thus O'Brien's last year of eligibility was wasted practicing and sitting on the bench, unable to play in a game.

Brandon Lang is reporting that Bill Self is out at Kansas after he loses in the Dance. He claims that this is due to the FBI investigation and all of the issues that Kansas has had this year. Also, he picked Northeastern to beat Kansas. I don't think so, but I would love to see it!

After just one year as head coach at Siena, former Bucknell manager of basketball operations Jamion Christian has been hired at George Washington.

I think Jamion is a very good coach. Would have been a great choice for Bucknell when he interviewed after DP left. But Siena fans can't be very happy with him bailing after one year for a job that is only one step up. And Siena, unlike Bucknell, is willing to pay a head coach a good amount of money.

Looking at the Siena board, I don't think I've ever seen a fan base as angry. And it appears he didn't even get a huge raise. Don't know if he gave Siena a chance to counter - because they might have been willing to match it.
