On the play prior to the one everyone is talking about, the ball was inbounded with about 13 seconds left, and Columbia up 4. Fordham had to go the entire length of the court to get off a shot. Remarkably, nobody guarded the shooter who had stationed himself in the corner behind the 3 point line. It took Fordham 5 seconds to get and make an uncontested three.
Why was nobody defending the shooter? This too is on the coach.

After a timeout, C's players, possibly with a change, could have been postioned where the coach wanted them and given plays, likely one or two presumably they've practiced. They're not pros but even NBAers need direction.

Does anybody think that Kyle Smith would not have called that TO? Even Joe Jones would have called it.

Chet:
Your instincts are fine, and have been impacted by the thousands of games you've played in & witnessed. If a timeout's not to be utilized in such an instance, then when would be the appropriate juncture? Factor in as well, that Engles' team was on the verge of completing three games in 45 hours; and that he'd been holding onto to his timeouts all afternoon as if they were redeemable for Thanksgiving turkeys on Thursday. By 6pm, Sunday, no doubt the Columbia kids had earned and deserved a minute's rest to compose themselves before playing out the final 8 seconds of that game.

BTW, Columbia Spectator is now NOT publishing an critical commentary about Engles, that would normally appear at the end of their articles. Engles, through Ungvar, has put the kibosh on that. This poor coach's insecurities cause him to devote an abundance of his time noting what his critics are saying & writing about him. If only Engles were as studious about basketball's ebb and flow, game management situations, and the empowerment that he'd develop in his taking a positive approach to motivating his staff and student athletes- he'd have won at least eight more games last season doing that, and seen his team advance to a post tournament; and we'd probably be, at present, engaged in discussion about a 4-0 Columbia team.
