I'm still kind of mad, actually. They still have the sign up but had no problem telling people too bad.

I'm sure a few of us would spring for "cheesesteaks" for the house if we did this against a D1 team. Doing against a D3 team shouldn't even get you a stale soft pretzel, although I did enjoy my cheesesteak last year (and left a large tip)

I'm really mad. First time I've ever been to a 100 point game and it's for a free burrito over on Drexel campus?

Mike Wang's play almost made up for it. He was real good other than a Freshman sequence near the end of the first half. You can't read much into a game like that but he was that good.

I also liked mini-Duncombe on Stockton State. Brought back memories of Hoss.

They're not even good cheesesteaks. I ended up going to the Prince which just opened on 39th.

Penn students no longer eat cheesesteaks. When I was there in the 70s, we had 3 or 4 cheesesteak joints on or near campus, and we would make regular runs up Lancaster Ave to Larry's Home of the Bellyfillers. Penn students no longer believe in the Freshman 15--they work out, don't eat cheesesteaks and don't go to Penn basketball games. It's a completely different world out there. They sell far more Sweetgreen salads than cheesesteaks at Penn.

There are way more sushi places than cheesesteak places on campus.

Me sad.

I stocked up on 2-for-1 Wawa Sizzlis to compensate.

On a related note, I've been told by a number of seemingly-well-informed individuals that college students have far less sex these days than when I was that age. As most of my fondest Penn memories involve either basketball, cheesesteaks or knocking boots, this makes me very sad.

A '94 graduate comments on the cheesesteaks - taco controversy.

- From the present day to when I was an undergraduate at Penn from 1991-1994, Abner’s had a promotion that when the Quakers scored 100 points, all fans in attendance were awarded free cheesesteaks after providing a ticket stub. Last December, Abner’s grudgingly honored this promotion when Penn defeated Delaware State 105-52. I say grudgingly because although the banner in the corner of the establishment, which was hanging this past Saturday, advertised the free cheesesteak for 100 points promotion, the manager of the Abner’s spent most of the night last year yelling at patrons that free cheesesteaks were to be given with no sides (no mushrooms, no peppers, etc.) and glaring at everyone in the establishment there to collect on the deal. I remember this vividly along with the fact that the only person who beat my daughter and me to Abner’s last year after the game was former Governor Ed Rendell, who must have travelled there by jetpack (my daughter and I sprinted there from the Palestra).

This past Saturday was a different story. When my daughter and I arrived after the game with our ticket stubs in hand, the same manager as last year was angrily telling the hungry crowd that Abner’s was not honoring the promotion. Akin to the “no soup for you” Seinfeld episode, the manager repeatedly told customers they were not honoring the promotion, despite the huge promotional banner still hanging in the corner and touting the promotion. Puzzled alumni and students pointed to the banner but the manager was unmoved. Patrons suggested he call the owner of the establishment, but he declined. -

Editor's note: An employee from Abner's says that the restaurant actually handed out free cheesesteaks later in the night. More information is available on this Twitter thread.

William is a good dude. All of this is true. The manager is a first class a$$hole. My son is still talking about him 2 days later. It left an impression. Some good life lessons were had about the whole thing.

I'm still trying to figure out how Rendell got there so fast last year.
