Awesome win! Congrats Yalies. You beat KP#29 Miami in their own house! No surprise to me. For months I've been reminding that with Bruner back, Atkinson under the hoop and a bevy of talented guards, Yale could win this league, especially with the tournament in New Haven.

Great win for the Elis. Best win in the league so far.

Impressive win, especially in Miami. Yale is certainly looking good and have playoffs at home has them in a great spot. Shame is I would love to see what Harvard and Penn could have done in non-conf schedule if they both were fully healthy. That said, overall a positive league night and more opportunities for big wins coming. Let’s hope the other teams can snag a few.

Just technical correction--the game was at the American Airlines arena in a tournament, not in the Watsco Center, which is the U's home arena.

Still a very impressive win, even though that is 3 in a row for Miami, after losses to Seton Hall and Rutgers. I don't think they will stay in the top 50. But any Ivy team that can win a game like this, especially after being down 15 is very good. And Oni killed them.

Wonder how analytical sites count it.

Seton Hall plays at its own gym once or twice a season, but at the Prudential Center otherwise. Are those home games for Seton Hall? I would think so.

Seton Hall plays maybe 1 game against a low level team at their old arena with all the lines (remember it fondly from "Eastern Basketball" days).

Miami plays no games except this tournament at American Airlines Arena:

https://hurricanesports.com/schedule.aspx?schedule...

This will count as a neutral site game, although we know they should have some advantage---looking at photos of the game in the Miami Herald story, it appears that the attendance was minimal.

Those are home games, because they are IDed as a home arena, just like MSG for St. John’s. The rule for consideration as a home arena, I believe, is 3+ games. Miami in AA wouldn’t be, because they’ll be under that threshold.

For the analytical sites, they’ll treat that game as “Semi-Away” or “Semi-Home” which will involve an SOS adjustment that is between a full one and if the game were played neutral.

Thanks, didn't realize this was a tournament.

Hope this nuance doesn't deprive Yale in some analytical calculation that matters come March.

Do you know how they handle the Palestra for Big Five games?

I've always thought it was unfair for Penn (and biased in favor of the opposition) to treat them analytically as Penn home games.

Why would it be unfair to Penn?

KP treats them all as home (or away) except St. Joe’s which is always neutral.

Would have to go back to the old team sheets to see what the NCAA thinks...

Most games have true home and road teams in every sense of the word.

Big Five games at the Palestra don't really work like that.

Because the ratings systems give more value to "away" wins than to home ones. And road losses are not given the same level of deductions as "home" losses.

That's why treating the Big Five Palestra games, analytically, as simply any other "home" Penn game is not fair to Penn.

Seems to me that the analytics sees the truth, which is any game at The Palestra is a home game for Penn. especially Big 5

Back to Yale. What I've seen of them is pretty scary. Terrific versatility, cohesion, and a great combination of individual scoring ability and unselfish passing.

I agree. Atkinson and Bruner looked pretty unstoppable against Miami. I came into this season dubious on Yale as I didn’t feel Bruner could make up for the serious deficiencies they showed in the ILT, but with the significant steps guys like Azair Swain and Atkinson have made, along with a healthy Bruner, that frees up Oni to do his thing off the ball and they are an issue.

I also agree.

Bruner was really impressive in his limited play 2 seasons ago and looks to be better this season. Reynolds is a solid and consistent presence down low. Atkinson led the league in shooting percentage last year and also seems to have improved.

Last year, it felt that Oni was putting too much of the offense on his shoulders and his efficiency declined for the first 1/2 to 2/3 of the season. Once the first-years matured and the team figured things out, they were were really good in the second half of the league schedule - going 7-1.

With a healthier front court, and experienced & deep backcourt and added maturity across the rotation, they are arguably the league's top team at this moment.

There was a reason in preseason Torvik picked Yale just behind Harvard, giving Yale about a 40% chance of making the tournament. It was a controversial choice, but seems to have been the right one.

On August 15th, I wrote:

"Yale is much more than a sleeper. If Bruner is healthy, then Atkinson, Reynolds and the bevy of talented guards makes the Eli's very very good."

No surprise here, as I made other posts at that time further explaining my rationale. Yale has all of the pieces.

If Harvard isn't totally healthy, Yale is the favorite. If both Harvard and Yale are healthy, then we could have two top 75 teams, or better! KP currently has Yale #86 and a depleted Harvard at #92. Penn could join the party with a big win tonight over Miami.

Penn has officially joined the party! Big win.

Best win yet for an Ivy team?

Doubt Miami will continue the tradition of scheduling within our league.

They could try qualifying for Ivy Madness, but they'd have to get in via sponsor's exemption.

Well, if Penn officially joined the party by clobbering Miami by 14 (compared to Yale's 4 point squeaker), how about now that the Quakers convincingly defeated defending national champions Villanova? After jumping out to a 14-2 lead, Penn fell behind after a 15-0 'Nova run and then responded with a 12-2 of its own. Penn led the rest of the way while expanding its lead to 10 late in the second half. Don't let the 3 pt. final margin fool you (due to some bizarre last second drama). Penn shredded Villanova's defense with its ball movement and dominated the boards.

Not only have the Quakers joined the party; they are the Belles of the Ball.

ps - I don't mean to downplay Yale's comeback from a 10 pt. halftime deficit, but I don't see them, Harvard, or anyone else as prohibitive favorites. If it weren't for the fact that this year's tournament is at Payne Whitney, I would put them a notch behind Penn due to the difference in coaching.

There's a men's bball game scheduled at Payne Whitney tomorrow, and the visitors from New Rochelle will find the facility very much to their liking; breaking the schneid against Ivy League opponents and restoring KP's faith in Iona as a more than respectable D-1 school team.

Well, I got this one wrong, too. Congratulations to Yale.
No excuses for my incompetence, but what a luxury it is for the Bulldogs to have a 6'10" kid in Atkinson- coming off the bench and shooting 70%, FGP.? (SEVENTY)
And today, Atkinson actually elevated his season's shooting percentage, going 10 for 10! WOW!

Atkinson to me is one of the most improved players in the league. He has clearly worked on his game in the off season. Already a great rebounder and defender he ca now put it on the floor and finish with either hand at the rim. Along with Bruner and Reynolds their big three makes for a most intriguing matchup with Penn’s 3 bigs when the teams meet in February

Yes. That should be interesting. One more thing about Iona at Yale on Saturday- the home team gave up 54 points in the second half. Could be they just lost some focus; but that's something I don't see Penn allowing for, at least not based on what we've seen of them to date.
Merry Christmas.
