Last night SportsCenter had a really moving tribute to Fran Dunphy. They mentioned a lot about his ties to the big 5 and his time at Penn. In his last game vs. Villanova, Jay Wright tweeted asking Villanova fans to give Fran a standing ovation when he was introduced. Their fans obliged. It was a really classy move.
Wright's comment: "there hasn’t been as many guys that have been successful, respected and as well-liked as him.â€
Wright is such an opposite to Massimino. He's a credit to the school and the Big 5.

I agree about Wright, but it's not very hard to look good when your point of comparison is Rollie Massimino.

In fairness to Wright, he has continually championed the Big 5, even as his team has been steamrolling through it, and gave nothing but respect. Never has shown a glimpse of big timing it unlike their past coaches...

He is pure class. Something that was pretty abnormal after the decades of dealing with that school.
Has anyone seen if it's online?
I hope they start prepping our students now.

For those who didn't follow Fran (probably not many of us), Fran attended LaSalle, played for the Explorers, and was an assistant to Speedy Morris there. He got his Masters at Villanova. He coached at Penn for 17 seasons and turned around the program to lead us to 10 Ivy League Titles and four 2nd place finishes. He coached at Temple for 12 years (not including this year) and led them to 3 Atlantic 10 championships and 2 regular season championships.
In addition to that, he was an assistant coach at Army, Maryland, and Malvern Prep.
Fran was a class act and the winningest coach in Big 5 history. He is one of 25 active coaches with 500 wins. He has helped mentor a huge number of successful assistant coaches, including our own Steve Donahue.
Penn students, please make sure to honor him when he plays his last Big 5 game against Penn!

BTW, Fran is putting together a nice season so far at 7-2, with one of those losses being to Villanova. I hope he wins the A-10.

It is a shame that game won't be at the Palestra.

That's correct--it's at the former Apollo (oh, how I wish they had kept that name). I don't think they are likely to get any Penn students to go up there for the game, despite the fact that they sell beer.
