Didn’t see the game. Stats suggest Sotos played well and apparently we played at least a little defense.

That was a statement loss, lol. I don’t believe in moral victories, but this was one. Last year we had a team that we wanted to see win a game or two like this. They didn’t and that was a huge disappointment. But this year, with so many unknowns, this loss feels much better than the Maryland loss felt last year. This team is coming!

1. I also didn't see the game, but I would agree. Defense gave up 1.07 points per possession, which is slightly worse than normal - but they were playing a really strong team, not Canisius or La Salle. Bison D did better against them than did Creighton or Minnesota, and only slightly worse than the Syracuse D.

2. As for Sotos, he started the year doing some good things but turning over the ball too much. But over the past five games, it has gotten a lot better - and today he had only one turnover against a quick, athletic team. And that turnover was an offensive foul. Over the past five games, his assist to turnover ratio has been 2:1 or better.

He is also 59th in the nation in Pomeroy's assist rate, plus is shooting 47% on twos and 50% on threes.

Sorry, but Nate commits a lot of dumb fouls. Just got his 5th on a horrible screen where he obviously turned his body. Not smart. And a minute later a dumb reach in foul 27’ from the basket by Moore.

3. I would have agreed with this last year (or previous years), but despite the fouls today, Nate has made enormous improvement this year in not taking unnecessary fouls. Here are his fouls per 40 numbers for his career:

Frosh: 9.6 per 40
Soph: 6.2
Junior: 5.6
Senior: 3.5 (Was 2.6 before today)

For reference, Nate's 3.5 fouls per 40 is much better than Nana did in any of his four years. And it is equivalent to Muscala's average for his first three years. (Muscala's foul number got a lot better his senior year, but he had the advantage of a lot more height and jumping ability - which meant he didn't have to guard post players as physically.)

Proud of the way the team fought until the end, disappointing we couldn’t get a clean shot off at the end.

4. Yes, proud of the effort. Could have easily been a win. Agree the last shot was disappointing. OSU said after the game that they anticipated the play the Bison would run and jumped it. But apparently there were no viable options when that happened. In hindsight, the ball quickly needed to go to Avi on the right wing. If nothing else, he had time for a couple of aggressive dribble and then a pull-up jumper.

5. Great effort by the Bison in the turnover department. Despite the level of competition, they had only eight turnovers. Even more impressive is that five of those eight were offensive fouls, as opposed to travels, bad passes, OSU steals, etc. In fact, through the first 33 minutes, BU only had one turnover other than an offensive foul.

6. One stat that hurt was the Bison offensive rebounding. Of 35 available offensive rebounds, they got only 5 (a very subpar 14.3%). At the other end, BU got 72.7% of the defensive rebounds, which is better than their average.

7. Nice to see Meeks back. I think he will play an important role as he gets back into the swing of things.

8. Andrew Funk started the year 0-12 on threes. Since then, he is 6-8 - including 2-3 today. As he gains more experience and confidence, I expect him to become an important player off the bench in PL play.

One more point I should have added is that after today's game, Avi is averaging 16 ppg over the last three, with 13+ each game. He has hit 6-11 on twos and 10-19 on threes.

I want to say that I regret the use of the word “dumb” to describe some of Nate’s fouls. I think some are simply poor choices or over-aggressiveness for the moment. As a senior he has to be cognizant of the situation and be careful. With his skills he definitely could be a difference-maker at the end of any game. As 137’s stats show, he has made great strides over his career.

Fun game to watch. Free throws continue to haunt this team.

It will be fun to see this team grow throughout the season. Hopefully, they will peak around PL tournament time.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

What made it painful was the timing of the misses - especially the two by Bruce with 8 minutes left. But their overall FT shooting was pretty good. They hit 13-18 (.722), the exact same mark as OSU had. If they could hit .722 every game, it would rank them 94th in the nation (out of 351).

Bison have a number of good FT shooters, and two or three problem ones. FT shooting on the year:

Mackenzie 33-40 (.825)
Sestina 23-28 (.821)
Sotos 13-17 (.765)
Meeks 3-4 (.750)
Newman 21-31 (.677)
Moore 20-30 (.667)
Toomer 10-22 (.455)
Robertson 2-9 (.222)

The two who have struggled from the line are obvious, but generally Newman has struggled some as well. He hit 9-10 vs Northeastern, but is only 12-21 (57%) in other games, including at least two banks. He was 6-13 as a freshman.

I think Avi's problems at the line are more mental than physical. Last year he went 10-12, following a poor freshman year from the line. But in a much larger sample, i.e. his HS career, he hit 445-611 (73%). Moore, btw, has hit 93-128 (73%) over his career at Bucknell.

agree about the mental aspect. remember he started the first three games in a funk going 2-11, but has since gotten back on track and is 8-11 since then.
