Not sure if all you guys are on Twitter, but I have to say last night could have been the most fun I've had going through the many tweets around the game from folks ranging from big Penn fans to a lot of noteworthy journalists that cover college basketball.

My question is... any chance we had recruits in the stands last night? Because that would have been the game to do it for sure.

Beyond that, I have to think Coach Donahue and staff would be sending that video to all the top kids we are recruiting right now and it would be a hell of an endorsement for the program.

There is A LOT of basketball left and this is a tough schedule, particularly the Ivy slate, but if we continue to play well, have to hope this could help the staff to take a next step forward in recruiting.

it's a cool place to be where we don't need this win to help us with next september's class and can instead focus on the following september.

any hs 2019 4* people are welcome to ignore me there.

Yeah, I was checking out the twitter feeds of Tannenwald and Fatsis and our old buddy Andy Glockner last night. Clearly all were very moved.

That was basically the point of my thread about caring about basketball. I was thinking purely of recruiting. It cannot be matched and is a HUGE tool. Playing the Big 5 schools every year in good atmospheres is something worth selling, especially with Nova winning 2 recent titles.

Here is the QMH blog post from this morning It’s a good read. Also note the link to Dave Zeitlin’s piece in the Athletic for those who subscribe.

Well, I plan on being at that Monmouth game so we'll see how quickly last night turned into an instant classic.

Two great pieces. As to the QMH one (I'm still angry at him for sending me down the rabbit hole of the Haunting of 657 Boulevard in Westfield story after his last story), I completely forgot about Rock n Roll Part 2.

  • Quote:
QMH will tell you what ran through his head during that moment. This is his 14th year working with men's basketball, which might seem like a lifetime to some—Penn freshmen, for instance, who were four or maybe five years old when QMH arrived in University City—but there's still a large contingent of the Penn basketball community who would consider QMH a fresh face, a baby.

He was thinking of those people, who might have been students through the halcyon days of the 1970s or the great teams through the 1990s and into the early part of this century. There are many who continue to ring the court in their longtime seats, who have seen so many incredible moments in this building but have been beaten down by a decade or so of play they consider below the program's standards. (How's that for diplomacy?) Those who remember the student section being filled every game, students wearing costumes and riding opponents and singing "Rock n Roll Part 2" at the final media timeout ahead of another convincing win. Heck, those who remember being those students.

QMH could hear them. He could feel them. He can almost see them running up into the current student section, grabbing one of the hundreds of red-shirted students who might have been making their first trip to a game at the venerable college basketball institution that sits on their very campus, and shaking them to get them to understand.

THIS. What you are witnessing at this moment. This is Penn Basketball.

Great stuff.

I always hated when our students sang that song and was embarrassed by it. They didn't experience being great for over a decade and then sucking for a bunch of years before being great again (albeit at a different level). They lucked out by matriculating into greatness and took it for granted. I wonder if students during the Glen Miller/Jerome years would chant,"You Suck!" now if given the chance.

Ironically, I miss Hang Jeff Davis, which was banned for even worse student behavior, but was a historical artifact from the raccoon coat days of big time football at Franklin Field.

Any ice today, Lady? No? .........

I would be stunned if the band didn't play ARN, but since the broadcast concluded before they would have, I can't know whether they did or not.

Haha, well I'm not going to lie, I was one of those students circa 1997-2001. I didn't feel bad about it either and remember it fondly. We didn't win my freshman year and we were bad my senior year, and I was fine saying it those times too. Let's be honest, some of those other Ivy teams at that time REALLY did suck.

The Ivy League was terrible at that time. Princeton was the only strong team. Penn finally became decent in 1992 and then good thereafter.

I miss giving some unsuspecting player the Brad Brown treatment.
