The ban, which was instituted during my time in West Philly, technically was that the Penn band could not play HJD.
At the next Penn Princeton game at the Palestra the Princeton band did us a major solid by playing it (since there was no ban on THEIR playing it). When we got to the climactic part of the song, the vitriol was directed right at (the late) Sheldon Hackney who was seated prominently in a choice section.
This by the way may have been the only time that anything originating from Princeton got a standing ovation from a Penn crowd.

I remember that. A major solid for sure, but they also knew the can of worms they were opening.

THAT is a beautiful story. It restores my faith in humanity, reminds me that there is far more that unites us than divides us, and ever-so-slightly reduces my disdain for Princeton.

They brought it back at the one game I was at this year.
They brought back Hang Jeff Davis?!!! Which game was that? I only missed the Stockton game because I was out of town for Thanksgiving, but it definitely hasn't surfaced at any other home game this year. You're probably thinking of Drink a Highball at halftime.

Cue shot of rim even worse than one of AJ's clanks.
Not that his work isn't appreciated. Or yours.

I'm talking football. They took it away last year and brought it back this year.

Oh, that's pretty interesting. So you're saying that Hang Jeff Davis was still played at football games until a year ago despite being banned from the Palestra during the Dunphy era? Hmmm.
What was the fan response? Did they reply,"Giddy Up!"? Since current students basically don't go to any games of any sport, this probably only applies to the alumni in attendance, many of whom may have dropped the F bomb 20 years ago, but would go with Giddy Up today.

Lyle
You're assuming that the students of today would (1) recognize an ice wagon; and (2) know what "Giddy-up" means.

It's not as though those terms were in daily conversation in the 60s and 70s when we were students. Nor was Jeff Davis still in the news.

The NCAA-mandated end of streamers also contributed to the end of “Hang Jeff†at basketball, since traditionally it’s what the band played when they flew onto the court after the first basket.

I can't say I heard any expletives and I was one of maybe 3 anywhere near the band who knew what it was. With my son with me I went with the ole Giddy Up. I was just glad to hear it. I still vividly remember my grandparents rushing to put their glove-covered-hands over my ears as a youth. The tuba could not drown it out enough. I loved it.

Dunno if anyone's watching, but Nova just forced Kansas to turn it over on an inbounds play with under 1 minute left in the 2nd half where Kansas threw it out of bounds in the backcourt.

And this time Nova didn’t have to trip the intended receiver to make it happen.

I wonder if students during the Glen Miller/Jerome years would chant,"You Suck!" now if given the chance.
It was definitely fun and it’s definitely embarrassing to think back on. Definitely would not do this again*
* unless Glen Miller were on the opposing bench, in which case I’d do it the entire game. (I’d feel even better about it if I also brought a sign that said “Just you, Glenâ€)
