first off, the board is better than using record. "FIVE HUNDRED"? What. You can't trot that crap out here. New Mexico in 12-13 and 13-14 was 23 and 33 in Ken Pom. In years ended 15, 16, 17, 18. They were between 100 and 125. This year they are 167. They didn't panic early enough. This is how programs die.
I plead guilty to analysis while train riding and not having great internet. For my community service, let's continue the Pomeroy series back further:
11-12: 20
10-11: 47
09-10: 43
08-09: 43
07-08: 32
06-07: 139
05-06: 115
04-05: 31
03-04: 115
02-03: 187
01-02: 92
Pomeroy ends there, but if you look at their history before that, one has to conclude that the major successes have been more aberration than the norm; basically, they were good when Alford (who seems to have reached his level of incompetence at UCLA, by the way) and Bliss were there, and not so much otherwise. I have to admit this surprised me; I guess the Pit's fearsome reputation has to do more with the fanatical support (and apparently NM fans are really devoted) they get there than with the actual results of the program.
At any rate, what i was gently trying to suggest earlier is that maybe the Lobos fans's expectations are a bit inflated relative to what the program's actual situation can bear. The Pit, while still a classic venue, is not as much of a draw as it used to be, given that almost all upper-echelon teams play in pro-style arenas these days. The state economy is not doing very well, and the athletic department has had financial difficulties (I can't find substantiating material, but some of the remarks on their board lead me to think that this is true of the school as a whole as well.) Of course, this isn't unique to them; even without the AI and fin aid issues, Penn very likely would have declined in the 80's and 90's because of things like the Big East, other teams having better arenas and TV contracts, etc.
I would also say that one needs to distinguish between concern and panic. It was correct to be concerned about where Penn hoops was going under Miller, but panic got us Allen. Not saying that the current coach is necessarily going to get NM back to the promised land, but given what he inherited, which apparently wasn't much, but it's still a bit early to hit the eject button.

Albuquerque is at altitude (higher than Denver.) I remember flying into Albuquerque and having a bit of difficulty catching my breath.
I wonder how much the difficulty of playing in The Pit is due to that.
Yeah, apparently the visitor's locker room is covered in posters telling you what to do if someone gets altitude sickness.

Same here. Listening to the Penn announcers on radio, and their feed is a few seconds behind the video.

Bad turnover by Woods. He now has 2 fouls, as well.
Penn is really coming apart with the Lobos pressure D.

The Penn audio is ahead of the New Mexico video. Just hit pause on the Penn audio until the two are in sync.

UNM ties it at 24 after a 3, an airball by JD and an easy Lobos layup.
The crowd and announcers are treating this like its a Tournament game.
It's hard to see Penn staying in this one (hope I'm wrong).

UNM 29 Penn 28 with 3:57 to go. Penn will have the ball coming of the TO.
AJ made a strong layup with guys all over him. When the refs called the foul on UNM, I thought the announcers were going to have a heart attack. These guys are more biased than Vince.
Unfortunately, AJ missed the FT.

Well if we don't take care of the ball better, hit free throws, and/or stay out of foul trouble we ain't got much of a shot.
