Thanks for this.
I love how a UNM player blamed his poor game on food poisoning from Chipotle! #FakeNews

I hope the coach looks at those photos. What a disgrace. No wonder that one official gave him every 2nd half call.

And the Philadelphia Inquirer had a very small article using only AP sources BUT had substantial articles on the other Big 5 Teams (and Drexel). We are freakin' 10-2 with some really nice wins - what do we have to do to get coverage in OUR OWN local papers?

Get real. Do you really think the Inquirer is going to send a reporter to Albuquerque to cover a one-off Penn-New Mexico game?

They could hire a stringer rather than just using an AP brief. I could (not that they would agree with the comparison) say that they would do it for 'Nova. Look how much coverage they are giving to Temple for a crappy bowl game.

Regardless of where the Inky sends reporters or hires stringers, Penn has fallen off the local sports consciousness. Yesterday morning’s sports updates on WHYY mentioned the Sixers’ win over Toronto, Villanova’s win over UConn, and St. Joe’s beating some nobody, but there was not even a word about Penn defeating New Mexico at The Pit. We essentially don’t exist in the minds of the city in general.

That was my original point Lyle. Thanks for agreeing with me. So how do we get coverage which this team certainly merits? Do we go to Sports Information and see if they can build relationships with the press?

Man, that guy is the biggest jerk to coach against us since Miller was at Brown. I, too, noticed how his histrionics seemed to pay off in the second half. I sure hope that doesn’t plant a seed in Grace’s mind for the post-Donahue era, which I trust is at least a decade away.

Beat Temple and St. Joe's. Then they are forced to acknowledge a Big 5 championship by a team they pretty much ignore.

OK, while we are at it, and definitely not to jinx anything, but here's one for the historians. When was the last time Penn won the Big 5 outright with a 4-0 record? My increasingly failing memory tells me 1973-4. The Allen-Maloney teams couldn't beat temple and the Ugonna-Koko teams couldn't beat St. Jos. This is much too long.

Ugonna and Koko teams did beat St. Joe’s and went 4-0 in official Big 5 games 2002 season.
Technically we went 4-1 against the Big 5 since we lost a close 2nd game to St. Joes but it wasn’t the official Big 5 game.
For the record we went 5-1 against City 6 as we also beat Drexel that season.
Agree it is too early to talk about this though as we have a very tough Temple team away and St. Joes is also very good, some injuries and a tough schedule have them ranked a little lower than I think they are (and they have one of the best young players in the city in Charlie Brown).

Yes, but only because we would be the opponent of the teams they actually cover. The fact that we’re from the same city is almost beside the point.

By the way, as of a few minutes ago, the AP rankings give us one point along with USF and NJIT. My guess is that Jack Scheuer voted us #25. At least some old time Palestra veterans still know we exist.

PN took the words right out of my mouth. I’d amend slightly to just say keep winning. We went into the dark ages so takes time to come back into the light. We are already there as a team, but there is always a lag into the media.
That said, I follow the local college b-ball guys on Twitter and they definitely give good coverage/mentions on social. I think this NM game didn’t mean that much because they aren’t that good and it’s outside Philly’s local media coverage.
I think Toledo is one of our most difficult games on the season because it’s away and they’re very good. Let’s hope Max is back and the guys really bring it after the holiday break!
