Well, yes, but still a considerable improvement from the 350s when we played them in late December.

Friggin' Monmouth is the new Friggin' Canisius.

To be fair, Canisius was far more damaging. That loss opened the season and cost us potentially a couple of more games in the pre-season NIT. Ultimately our NCAA seeding got capped due to this loss.

In retrospect, the Monmouth game was not as significant due the 0-3 IL start and for sure the loss against friggin' Cornell.

That Canisius team was so much better than this Monmouth team it's not funny. I'm pretty sure that team made it to the Garden for the NIT semis and beat a top 25 Cincinnati team during the regular season.

Trivia question:

When Canisius upset a very good Penn team in the pre-season NIT, who was their then obscure head coach?

BTW, enough about the Monmouth loss—Penn had multiple injuries and Monmouth was actually much better than their previous record and should have beaten Yale a few weeks before that. It’s not like losing to a Delaware State.

You did while I was going on about Monmouth. Great question—when we discuss the answer, in retrospect, mitigates the loss by just a little bit.

So, after someone figures out the Canisius Coach, for the follow-up question:

Who was Penn supposed to have played in the next pre-season NIT round---that team also got upset in the 1st round?

I give up. Who was it? The coach and/or the next opponent.

The Canisius coach was John Beilein.

Penn was supposed to play Syracuse in the next round, but Syracuse was upset by George Washington.

That was a totally depressing loss at home to Canisius to start off Jerome & Matt's senior year. The ending, an OT loss to Alabama in the 1st round of the NCAA, was rough as well.

The loss to Alabama wasn't nearly as upsetting as the loss to Canisius.

This thirteen-year-old at the time begs to differ. I only had tears after one of those games. Though the Canisius one still sticks in my craw. I can remember exactly where I was listening to it on radio.

The Purim loss to Alabama was very upsetting at a very Penn fan friendly Baltimore site. We battled back to get it to OT. We basically ensured that Antonio McDyess would become a millionaire, however.

Once again our outside shooting (Maloney) deserted us on the big stage. A normal game from him would have meant a victory. Jerome valiantly tried to keep us in it at the end of OT, but we just ran out of time....and out of time for this fantastic collection of Penn starters.

They were good enough to win more than a single NCAA game during their stint.
