I wonder if they have players practice foul shots when they are tired. Maybe that would be a good idea.

Q03:
No doubt AJ was doubled for a large stretch of the game, literally as soon as he received the ball.
But at some point in the later stages of the game, this stopped. That is when you saw AJ use a variety of moves against his man to score. He didn't have room to operate like that when he was doubled.

You can't seriously think this is a new idea right? I am pretty sure the team practices foul shots extensively, and in every situation. I am also pretty sure they make a much higher percentage of them in practice than they do in the games. Foul shots at this level is almost all mental. Some guys have the confidence they will make them all the time and some don't.
When you are playing the 13th and 14th player off your bench for double digit minutes against an inferior opponent, things become a lot more equal and small things are the difference in a game. Like a missed breakaway layup, a lane violation on their only miss at the FT line, Shooting 45% from the line when your season average is 55%, going 1-6 from 3 when you're sole purpose for playing to make 2 of 5, leaving your feet as an on ball defender so the opponent can draw a foul, etc, etc, etc.
Any one of these mistakes was the difference in the game when the margin was so thin.

I don't know if they are doing it or not. Apparently, you do. So, maybe they should get a psychologist on the job, if they don't already have one.

Obviously the results aren’t what anybody would like. However, the idea that they aren’t doing things that I do coaching low level rec league youth basketball is kind of hard to believe. I am sure that the staff both tries to build muscle memory through repetition when not under duress and then does things that create fatigue and pressure to try to simulate doing it under game conditions.

He has a private business in Manayunk, which is down by the river.
Yeah, just fire this guy and bring in Matt Foley for a fraction of the cost. And the results wouldn't be any worse.

My observation from afar is that this is having a big positive impact. We have a team that hasn’t panicked in the face of all sorts of adversity. We have individual players who have done the same. They’ve changed the culture and attitude significantly.
Hasn’t solved the free throw shooting, obviously, but I wouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Unless the replacement would fall through tables at the end of motivational speeches.

Here is an article from today's Asbury Park Press about Kasey Chambers, former Penn women's captain/starting guard (2015-2016 and 2016-2017) and present GW graduate assistant coach (2017-2018 and 2018-2019), who dealt with anxiety and panic attacks throughout her collegiate career.

Joe Dowling, who is discussed and quoted in the article, appears to have been a big help in getting Chambers in a much healthier personal and athletic place.

This is a major testament to his abilities; as I think those who watch the women's team regularly will concur, I would never have guessed that she had ever had any problems with her confidence.

Yeah, but still well beyond 300 on Ken Pom.
Speaking of which, since I noticed this right away at the Monmouth game, made a note to comment on it on this board after the game (but completely forgot about it after that horrendous loss):
Did you see who was on Monmouth's bench as an assistant coach? JR Reid. Yes, that guy. Now why in the world would he need this gig? Also can't help but remember Lefko giving him all he could handle, and more, in the first half of the '87 NCAA First Round matchup.

Ugh... what a brutal loss. I hate to tell you, but 5 more wins or not, they are 14 spots WORSE in KenPom since they played us.
They are currently ranked 315, and their last game was a BLOWOUT loss at Niagara 75-48 and before that game Niagara was ranked 312 by KenPom.
I took a quick look and this is the worse loss since Donahue’s first season 2016 when we lost to Lafayette away. It’s the worst home loss since Glen Miller was the head coach and we lost to Howard at the Palestra in 2008.
6 wins or not, this was a terrible loss and must be pulling down our advanced stats like a lead balloon. Let us never speak of it again.

3 of our losses are to Top 100 teams, 2 others to Princeton (#168)...and then, there's Monmouth.
If we win those two overtime games, we're still in the running for an at-large bid, too.

Yeah, I recognized him right away. The head coach is King Rice, who was Reid’s teammate at UNC. He probably doesn’t really need the job, but wants to get into coaching with a friend to help him.

Yes, which gets back to your post about variance a while back. To me, if you take away the Monmouth game, we don’t look particularly high variance. But with that game in there . . .

I mean, what other team can say it beat a Top 25 team, another Top 100 team (on the road), another team currently at 102....and lost, at home, to 315?

Monmouth just nipped Saint Peter's by 2.
They are now 8-4 in their conference, tied for (gulp) first place.
[1-12 OOC, but we're not touching that piece]
