Hard to believe, but this was not the worst 1st half by the Bison in recent years. In 2012 at Holy Cross we scored only 10 points in the 1st half, but were "only" down by 18. We came back but ultimately lost 54-52.

One of the worst halves of basketball I’ve ever seen from Bucknell. Ever

I remember a 17 point half against Wagner in Flannery’s last year. Did not think it could get worse than that. Surprise!

Your memory has adjusted the score because it couldn't believe how bad the Bison actually were in that first half at Wagner. Score at the half was actually 29-13. It was 17-13 with 6:30 left in the half, but then spiraled out of control.

In the first half, Bison were 1-11 on threes and 4-16 on twos. Ended up hitting 3-20 on threes. BU closed the gap to eight midway through the second half, but couldn't get much closer. Wagner ended up going 23-8 that season, albeit against a mediocre schedule.

Also very happy for the win, but curious about the seemingly slow reaction time to change things up by the staff. I may barely be qualified to coach 7-8 year olds so I obviously defer to those who are professionals, but it would have been nice to see some tangible changes maybe by the 10-min mark. Also these flat starts are a bit worrisome.

About Jimmy Sotos, I was impressed last year by his calm demeanor and seemingly rarely getting rattled. That has not changed this year. He appears confident and assured, which is so important for any team. He is a huge plus for the Bison.

In the second half, we saw indicators of who will get floor time in close games. Seems like this has consistently been Davis' philosophy-give entire team time to prove themselves during year then go with top 8 or so in playoffs. Works for me.

This approach has worked well in the past. So, I doubt that it will change this year.
New season, new team, new dream . . .

I think the second half was the tightest bench he has ever had in a game. Sotos and Mackenzie played every second, and Sestina played all but 23 seconds. Moore only came out due to foul trouble. And Toomer was only subbed out for about 2:45 midway through the half. He stayed in when he got his 4th foul with 4:30 left.

Yes, really, this has been he case in any of the closer games this season, especially the last month. I kept hearing about how deep the Bison are but when push comes to shove, it will be 6-8 guys with starters logging perhaps more minutes than even last year’s starters.

Almost all teams have a starting five that is a lot better than the subs, but I think the key is to have subs who won't really hurt you when they are in. I think Newman, Funk, and Meeks definitely are in that category - and would start for the bottom PL teams. And Jones and Robertson are capable of giving them some good minutes vs certain match-ups.

bucknell starters are playing less minutes - and the bench more - than three of the five other contenders: American, Colgate, and Lehigh. Less than Boston, who has six freshman seeing time and who is missing their second best player, and Lehigh, who definitely has a quality bench.

Here is the average minutes being played by the starters for the six possible contending teams:

AMERICAN:
Nelson 35.2
Iorio 38.1
Gasperini 26.8
Motuzis 22.6
Bragg 29.4
AVERAGE: 30.4

BOSTON:
Mahoney 24.3 (very foul prone)
Scanlon 32.5
McCoy 29.1
Mathon 16.6
Pascoe 19.1
AVERAGE: 24.7

BUCKNELL:
Sestina 28.5
Mackenzie 33.8
Sotos 30.8
Toomer 25.5
Moore 24.8
AVERAGE: 28.7

COLGATE:
Burns 32.1
Ivanauskas 30.6
Rayman 33.8
Amiel 22.6 (doesn't start but plays 5th most minutes)
Richardson 30.8 (didn't start first few games)
AVERAGE: 30.0

HOLY CROSS:
Grandison 35.0
Butler 33.8
Floyd 28.6 (would be over 30 except for injury)
Green 37.1
Faw 22.4
AVERAGE: 31.2

LEHIGH:
Andree 29.4
Leufroy 30.5
Tejada 28.6
Cohen 29.3
Karnik 19.3
AVERAGE: 27.5

One other interesting item is which players are seeing the most minutes, meaning they are not subbed out much. PL leaders in minutes per game:

1. Iorio, Sam-American So 12 457 38.1
2. Green,Caleb-HC So 14 520 37.1
3. Nelson, Sa'eed-American Jr 12 422 35.2
4. Grandison,Jacob-HC So 14 490 35.0
5. Mackenzie, Kimbal-Bucknell Sr 13 440 33.8
6. Butler,Austin-HC So 14 473 33.8
T6. Rayman, Will-Colgate Jr 14 473 33.8
8. Scanlon, Tyler-BU Jr 13 423 32.5
9. Burns, Jordan-Colgate So 14 450 32.1
10. Champion, Chuck-Loyola Jr 14 445 31.8
11. Funk, Tommy-ARMY Jr 14 441 31.5
12. Kostecka, Andrew-Loyola Jr 14 440 31.4
13. Sotos, Jimmy-Bucknell So 13 401 30.8
14. Davis, Cam-NAVY So 12 370 30.8
15. Richardson, Tucker-Colgate Fr 14 431 30.8
16. Ivanauskas, Rapolas-Colgate Jr 14 428 30.6
17. Leufroy, Kyle-Lehigh Sr 12 366 30.5
18. Jaworski, Justin-Lafayett So 12 360 30.0
19. Andree, Pat-Lehigh Jr 12 353 29.4
T19. Bragg, Marvin-American So 12 353 29.4

Note that Floyd, without his injury, would be well into the top 20 - despite having missed time with foul trouble as well.
