Ah, sweet. We need to run with that look for the rest of the season.

You're so right! The Big Head Quaker mascot is embarrassing. I think the normal Quaker in tricorn hat and knee breeches in '79 was Bob Wachter. He used to wear plastic buttocks under his colonial waistcoat and lift up his tails to moon the opposing fans.

I'd heard there were red unis in the works, but this was a pleasant surprise. The execution is meh, but I love the idea. Now, if they also brought back the warmups with the dribbling Ben Franklin logo, I'd be really impressed!

Steve, I thought Ben was spinning the ball on his finger, but those were pretty cool. I'd love to see a photo of them. Unfortunately, we rolled out the baby blues at about the same time, which we wore when we beat Georgetown at McDonough Gym around '81.

I can’t find any images of it, but if you freeze frame the documentary video, you can see the spinning version on the back. I also remember a version that featured the logo and a Capital P on the front and my fuzzy memory of that one had Ben dribbling the ball.

Where in the documentary? Now I do sort of remember the other one. It was kind of a cartoon bespectacled Franklin rampaging with his coattails flying and a big ball in his hand. That Ben was an electric ballhandler!

Yep, there it is. At 4:29 of the Vimeo clip, Angelo Reynolds walks by. Just as he turns, you get a quick glimpse of the Spinning Franklin. Oh, and again at 4:32, there's David Jackson jumping up and down with his back toward the camera.

Any time one of our teams has three uniforms, they should be white, red, and blue. None of this gray crap.

It’s a throwback to when I was 1 month old, but I’m a fan.
So they are actually wearing those on Sat? Hopefully can funnel some of that magic to get a much needed win.

The gray thing was a Nike-inspired fad a number of teams fell victim to. It appears to have passed, thankfully.
Also, it seems we have gotten away from the bright red / royal blue color scheme that was a plague introduced by the previous administration. It still lingers on some facilities and such, but seems to have been purged from the unis.

In my mind, our colors have always been navy blue and burgandy, but there had always been some slight variation, esp. in the shade of burgandy (warm-brownish, cool-bluish), from year to year and team to team. The real watershed came about a decade ago when the University hired some marketing firm to brand the overall product to create a unified public image. We officially became "PENN" and our colors were established as matching the red and blue of the American flag. The blues weren't bad, but it resulted in red uniforms that were identical to Cornell's color or that found on firetrucks. I always loved the burgandy that we wore in the late 70s, but the throwbacks appear to be a little too gray in tone, almost like the St. Joe's garnet, and kind of washed out looking. The iron on lettering looks pretty cheap, too. You need solid, sewn on numbers and letters to make a strong impression. Nonetheless, it's a step in the right direction, although I'm not optimistic that we'll see further improvements. This is likely a one shot deal.

Hopefully, all the teams will take a cue from the football program that was the first to get the colors right and go back to the sleeve stripes (although they also fell victim to the gray plague.) Your point about the iron-on lettering on the throwbacks was the root about my opinion that the execution was meh.
I’m afraid we are stuck with the PENN branding though. It is pervasive across the University and too well set in.
