American has made a major turnaround from last year and must be regarded as a legitimate contender. Two factors: (a) their good 6-10 center, Mark Gasperini, is back after missing all of last season with a concussion: and (b) they returned all of their rotation players from last year, which includes All-PL PG Sa'eed Nelson.
One other note. Don't know how many heard the Birdsong interview with John Meeks after last game, but it is worth noting that his injured foot/ankle is still not fully healed. He has to sit parts of each practice and is very limited in how much running he can do. That in turn has affected his conditioning, especially after having been unable to run at all for so many weeks.
Despite that, he has been playing well. On twos, he has hit 15-24 (.625) and is 5-11 (.455) on threes. On the boards, he is neck-and-neck with Newman for the second highest rebounding rate on the team.

Interesting take on the Bison from Doug Birdsong, answering questions on the AU blog:

Another double digit deficit. Seems like American’s offensive sets are more crisp and clean and less frenzied than Bucknell’s.

Predictable bad start. Down 2 at half, so all is not lost. We contrimue to have rebounding issues. Thankfully American has missed a lot of shots.

Another ugly first half. 1-10 from 3 and 7-12 from the line. Silver lining and what I think has kept us in the game is our rebounding. In past games we have sprinted down the court on a miss looking for a leak out whereas today we are making sure we secure those defensive rebounds to prevent 2nd chance opportunities. Good minutes from Bruce and Newman

Well a win’s a win but that was ugly. Very little flow the whole game. Glad we got the win certainly. American certainly is gonna be a tougher test in the PL compared to other years

So ugly but I'll take it. Sestina's 3 holds up.
And screw Stadium...PL might as well go to ESPN+ if you have to pay for it via apps.

Ugly win better than ugly loss. We hustled and scrapped and sometimes were better on the boards, but overall that is still a problem area. Our offensive flow is hard to watch at times. And we missed layups down the stretch, had a poor possession, missed two 1-1’s...and still won.
Officiating seemed worse than usual. I’m not sure I ever saw Davis as mad at officials than he was a few times today, slamming the scorers table and floor yelling “That was so bad!!â€

The best thing you can say about this game is it was a great defensive effort. Bruce Moore had a nice game despite being hit (again) with some bogus foul calls.

Hands down the ugliest game I’ve seen in a long time. Neither team could shoot and it was a turnover fest.
The ugliest point was when we let AU get a rebound off a missed free throw when AU only had one guy down low. 4 guys just stood around waiting for the rebound to come to them while AU went and got it.
Bucknell is tied for first, but playing like this is not sustainable.

Is this crew working the Lewisburg HS game tonight?
If this crew turned up at Lewisburg HS, the Lewisburg coach would undoubtedly be unhappy. Imo it was one of the worst crews to ever walk into Sojka. Inconsistent, numerous bad calls, and no common sense. Consider the team:
Paul Faia - used to ref A10 games but they no longer use him. Now only PL, NEC, and occasionally CAA. The number of games he refs has dropped, as has his Pomeroy ranking. Despite all of this, he was by far the top guy on the crew.
Dawud Mills - today was his second D1 assignment of the season, with the other at Navy eight weeks ago. Prior to that game, he had NEVER reffed a game between two D1 teams. Normally refs D2/D3 games.
George McDaniels - today was his second D1 assignment of the year, with the other having been at American nine weeks ago. He has been reffing for a number of years, but has never received more than four D1 assignments in one year. Not sure what else he has been doing, but he may have been an NBA replacement ref during the 2009 strike.
