With the coaches; tonight from 6:30 to 8:30. I cannot be there but would hope that some of our bloggers could be there to ask penetrating questions and to report back.

Good to hear you're saving your money, Chet! Coach hasn't offered any statement regarding the seven non-graduating individuals who've recently left his program; and all the prodding in the world probably won't be enough to convince him to speak on it tonight. Still, if 66 reaches out to me soon enough, I'd be pleased to accompany him there as his guest/date for the evening- as long as 66 is paying & properly introduces me to the fellas, then I'll gladly carry his coat and ensure that his KP Directory stays safe and secure!

Fireside chat was pleasant, but not terribly informative. The developments we have discussed (Tape and Brumant's improvement, Stefannini's shift to PG) were duly noted, and plans for this weekend at Cornell (`everyone must pay special attention to Morgan, it would be good if we could run the offense through Tape')were mentioned. But with one exception, I cannot say that any new nuggets of information were gleaned.
The one exception is a significant recruit. Let's all keep a close watch over Verbal Commits in the next couple of days....

Of course it was up to YOU, to have made it more informative by having asked the obvious questions that needed to be asked- even if Coach Engles would have been put on the spot by your having done so. Why did you fail to take action?

Nothing specific about the players you mentioned. Two other tidbits were, first, that in response to the question "in what area of play has the team improved the most since the first day of practice," Engles said "sharing the ball." And, during an informal chat one of the coaches noted that, say, in comparison to 10 years ago, players and parents today are noticeably more attuned to getting into a high academic school--which I guess may explains why Ivies are accessing a larger number of good players.

Also, Engles said that Smith has recovered quickly, is walking around, and will rejoin the team in April.

Mike Smith will be petitioning the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility, to be utilized at a non Ivy League D-1 school in 20-21, and following his graduation from Columbia College.

Unlike football, in which guys can drop out of school the spring of their junior year and play a medical redshirt year, in basketball a player has to drop out for a full year for a medical redshirt. The only player I can recall to have done that was the great Alex Rosenberg. Every year in football every Ivy has a few players who followed the redshirt path and got a fifth year.

For example, our terrific all purpose WR/wildcat QB Kyle Castner will be back next Fall for his medical redshirt fifth year since he was injured in his freshman year. But doing so requires that you be a full time student working for your undergraduate degree, which generally means leaving school the spring of your junior year. I imagine that Josh Wainwright will take a similar path.

Chet Forte was truly GREAT; but I wouldn't toss around that adjective too loosely, whether I was living life to the hilt or in the netherworld, like you Chet. And speaking of which, and as you so unceremoniously lectured that poor septuagenarian last week, let's just keep it to Columbia basketball here.
