With one semester left before he was to graduate, Rodney Hunter is now apparently gone from Columbia College and the men's basketball program. Rodney began this season as part of Columbia's starting five; and the coach crowed about what a pleasant surprise Hunter had been for the program during the pre-season practices and scrimmages; and merely two months later, Rodney Hunter is gone. That's now SIX student athletes and TWO coaches who've jumped Jim Engles' sinking ship in the last fifteen months- a startling rate of attrition matched ONLY in Washington, D.C. by the Trump administration. This is not, mind you, nearly an issue for any of the other Ivy member schools; ONLY HERE! IN NEW YORK CITY- FOR THE SCHOOL IN MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS. And still the sniffling geezers who write in here all too regularly, professing their love for Columbia basketball and supplying information about amounts of monies they've donated to the CU athletic program over the years, refuse to demand answers from Peter Pilling and Jim Engles as to the appropriate, obvious and necessary questions. Not even any of those interlopers, who have time to come on here and lecture on all forms of inappropriate language, have time for this subject- a student athlete's quitting a team is the sporting equivalent of suicide; and it should be of concern to us all.

maybe his dad will come and explain what happened. He was a such a promoter of Hunter before he enrolled. What a foolish decision to leave now (unless he had no choice). One more semester and he could graduate and go find a school that would take a grad transfer with his stats.

Also, there is a difference between "quitting" and "transferring." Many factors go into transferring and on some occasions, players don't have a choice and there are circumstances most will never know about. I think back to the years of criticism Kyle Smith took for Dyami Starks when people didn't know why Starks left.

Billy: Kyle Smith may have had one kid leave in an unsettling way, during his entire six years at Columbia; meanwhile, his successor's had SIX players and TWO assistant coaches leave in one year- which of these situation do you think is more unsettling?

One odd thought. Can Hunter actually come back and play his final year of eligibility at Columbia next year if he leaves School now? If he graduated in the spring, he’d have to go the grad route like Castlin. But if he left School, could he come back to finish next year and play basketball?

He's not coming back to school or to Columbia basketball.

Let's just say that the parent of a current player was quite uncomfortable passing on even this little bit of information. I'm the one who speculated that if someone leaves the team at the end of January after grades come out, his departure probably has something to do with his academic performance. This speculation could be completely erroneous, though his departure from school suggests that whatever happened had absolutely nothing to do with the basketball program.

Rodney participated in all games to date, apart from those versus Cornell. A number of those took place after the fall semester ended- namely, those versus Rutgers, Northwestern, Binghamton and Elmira.

Got it. Yes, it seems clear that there is nothing to gain basketball-wise from leaving. And it could preclude even going the graduate route. Doesn’t have to be grades, necessarily, but obviously something personal.

Wish Rodney and his family the best.

I won't go into all of the details. For starters it's not grades related. He's grades are good as they have always been. It's also nothing with Coach Engles, he and the AD have been great as far as the situation is concerned. Rodney has done everything he's been asked to do and sacrificing his game for the team. He loves the team and the school.
Hint...............He will be back(summer) with 2 years of eligibility left and one can/will be at Columbia.

Thank you very much Mr Hunter for the clarification. I am delighted to learn that Rodney will be returning to Columbia this summer "with 2 years of eligibility left and one can/will be at Columbia." Also, I am glad to hear that his leaving now has nothing whatsoever to do with Coach Engles and is not grade related as some had wrongly speculated. Whatever the situation is, I believe that all Columbia fans wish the Hunter family the very best. For my part, I have enjoyed reading all of your wise posts on this Board the past three years and look forward to dialoguing with your further.

I wasn't comparing Kyle and Engles' attrition, just that there are many circumstances for transfer beyond playing time and happiness with the coaches that many never know about and don't always fall on the coach.

Two additional years of eligibility is not possible as he's already used three: 16-17, 17-18 and 18-19. He played in 13 games this season so unless CU plays in 44 games this year he cannot get this year back. Plus, he only has one more year of eligibility in his five-year clock due to his redshirt as a freshman. One gets five years to play four.

I hope the kid isn't getting erroneous advice.

Last year there were changes to the NCAA rules on redshirting but I think the only change to the number of games played applies to football.

The one way to get a 6th year is to take an academic year off - like what Rosenberg did. Does that mean Rodney has 1 1/2 years eligibility remaining? I'm unclear on how half seasons work.

Do you have a handle on the eligibility rules on this specific situation or are you speculating? I think the question is whether Hunter retains an extra half-season by taking the semester off. I could be wrong about that. I defer to Mr. Hunter as being more of an expert than I am.

I won't say that I'm an expert, but we are making an informed decision. Nothing is a 100% guarantee other than he will be back at Columbia this summer. My brother is a college basketball coach. my best friend's wife is an Asst. AD of basketball at a G5 school, the people here at Columbia............so it's not a decision that has been take lightly.

How does the governing NCAA body define "having taken a semester off" if a student athlete's competed in four games from December 22, 2018 to January 12, 2019- a period of time following the conclusion of the fall semester and the administration of said term's examinations???

Rodney isn't enrolled for the spring semester if I'm understanding this thread correctly. As long as he isn't an enrolled student, he isn't using up his eligibility. That part is clear.

What I'm not clear about are the rules on eligibility moving forward. Does he get an extra half season at Columbia and then 1 year as a grad transfer elsewhere? I assume it can't be 2 full years because he played 13 games during the fall semester. That's above the threshold I think.

THAT part may be clear as to Rodney Hunter's future eligibility. But does the NCAA care that the school played him in games following the conclusion of the fall semester, given that he's not a spring-2019 student?

Not sure who that is, lol. I was referring to my other son. He's a 6'3 safety. He ultimately chose Marshall over UVA, Iowa State, Columbia, Cornell, Fordham, and Wake Forest.

The Hunters love Columbia and the experiences we've had the last few year!!!!

Let's see: this guy's son will be back in May; the Insider's already informed us that Mike Smith will be rejoining the team in April.....
That's all well and good; but the way this Princeton game's going tonight (Princeton up, 20-8, midway through the first half), CU's season could basically be over, in approximately 27 hours from now.

According to Jeff Goodman at Stadium.com, Rodney Hunter will be transferring.

Also, C.J. Davis will attempt to be a grad transfer.

I do not see how Engles is at fault here. He gave Hunter plenty of chances. While I wish Rodney the best of luck, I do not see this as an Engles issue. Rodney tried hard and played good defense, but his offensive shortcomings kept him on the bench.

Isn't Rodney graduating this spring? After Rodney's injury his freshman year, I recall his father posting that he expected Rodney to play at another school as a graduate transfer.

Just for the record. He's at Columbia and has been since summer. There are a few rules that everyone involved didn't realize. So, no he will graduate this semester and grad transfer.
