Do you have a handle on the eligibility rules on this specific situation or are you speculating? I think the question is whether Hunter retains an extra half-season by taking the semester off. I could be wrong about that. I defer to Mr. Hunter as being more of an expert than I am.

I won't say that I'm an expert, but we are making an informed decision. Nothing is a 100% guarantee other than he will be back at Columbia this summer. My brother is a college basketball coach. my best friend's wife is an Asst. AD of basketball at a G5 school, the people here at Columbia............so it's not a decision that has been take lightly.

How does the governing NCAA body define "having taken a semester off" if a student athlete's competed in four games from December 22, 2018 to January 12, 2019- a period of time following the conclusion of the fall semester and the administration of said term's examinations???

Rodney Hunter; yet another Engles casualty 01-31-19 02:11 PM - Post#274273
In response to AntiUngvar
Rodney isn't enrolled for the spring semester if I'm understanding this thread correctly. As long as he isn't an enrolled student, he isn't using up his eligibility. That part is clear.
What I'm not clear about are the rules on eligibility moving forward. Does he get an extra half season at Columbia and then 1 year as a grad transfer elsewhere? I assume it can't be 2 full years because he played 13 games during the fall semester. That's above the threshold I think.

THAT part may be clear as to Rodney Hunter's future eligibility. But does the NCAA care that the school played him in games following the conclusion of the fall semester, given that he's not a spring-2019 student?

Yes, I heard an unconfirmed rumor about a possible 295 pound football recruit with the "Hunter" name, but nothing official yet so we will have to wait and see what happens.

Not sure who that is, lol. I was referring to my other son. He's a 6'3 safety. He ultimately chose Marshall over UVA, Iowa State, Columbia, Cornell, Fordham, and Wake Forest.
The Hunters love Columbia and the experiences we've had the last few year!!!!

He will be back in May------100%
Let's see: this guy's son will be back in May; the Insider's already informed us that Mike Smith will be rejoining the team in April.....
That's all well and good; but the way this Princeton game's going tonight (Princeton up, 20-8, midway through the first half), CU's season could basically be over, in approximately 27 hours from now.

Worst offensive display in the first half in my memory. We cannot buy a basket.

According to Jeff Goodman at Stadium.com, Rodney Hunter will be transferring.
Also, C.J. Davis will attempt to be a grad transfer.

I do not see how Engles is at fault here. He gave Hunter plenty of chances. While I wish Rodney the best of luck, I do not see this as an Engles issue. Rodney tried hard and played good defense, but his offensive shortcomings kept him on the bench.

Isn't Rodney graduating this spring? After Rodney's injury his freshman year, I recall his father posting that he expected Rodney to play at another school as a graduate transfer.

The word was he was done last January. What made you think he would return?

this statement from his dad (among others):

I saw that too. Maybe I was listening to another branch of the grapevine, but from last February on, I heard he was done and gone.

I honestly never expected him to return. And considering he left one semester short of graduation there has to be more to the story.

Just for the record. He's at Columbia and has been since summer. There are a few rules that everyone involved didn't realize. So, no he will graduate this semester and grad transfer.
