Should be interesting to see how the matchups play here. Yale will play a lot bigger than Brown. Hopefully Max is ok and has another 20 minute night in him. Our defensive depth on the perimeter will help (last year I thought we had a little bit of a problem guarding all 3 of their guards — we could take 2 away, but not all 3). As with Brown, I like how we match up with Yale, and I think we have more than a puncher’s chance tonight.

I don’t know what to say about the lack of interest in this. Weird. Down 4 under 8. We can’t buy a foul call down low while Yale is parading to the line. 3s not failing either. Yale turns have helped keep it close.

4-16 from 3. Wang is way off and Bryce isn’t himself. Offensive rebounds have actually been on our side but we haven’t converted on them much. Oni getting his but making him work a bit. They need the 3s to drop. It’s that simple.

They try to go two for one and Woods bricks one horribly. Leads to a transition for Oni and a second foul on Woods. Bad exchange.

Yeah, that was a pretty rough sequence. We had two pretty good looks to end the half, but our shots are way off.
We need to start the second half much stronger. Goodman's about the only one who's shot well so far.

This old head wasn’t posting because I was there for this disaster. Wang and Woods missed consecutive open 3 looks that could have tied it at 62 and we then made one bad decision after another to give up a 9-0 run. Ballgame.
Just don’t have enough guys capable of scoring other ways when the threes aren’t falling, especially in the backcourt. Last year Foreman turned himself into one of those guys in Ivy play. We haven’t had the equivalent from the guards this year.

I know how this may sound but penn was playing with house money tonight. I really enjoyed watching PU go down with Cannady and what Cornell did to Harvard. That was special as Morgan was a non-event until late when he always has the ability to take over. Columbia predictably left their game in Cambridge last night. No shame there.

I only caught the last 8 minutes or so. The brought it close with plenty of time, but then it got away. Mike Wang took 2 quick release 3's. He has a good quick release, but his eyes and feet seemed less set than his good shots.
Wood was trying to make things happen. He was defending players much larger (as usual) and certainly making them work. His three point shot is an enigma though. He sort of loses touch with the ball sometimes as he shoots and the shot isn't even close. Occasionally when he doesn't lose fingertip control, his shot looks pretty smooth and accurate.
To me the key is that against Ivy competition they are just not moving the ball as briskly both in their passes and dribbling. Each player holds the ball just a bit longer to see their one-on-one possibilities, thinking that the Ivy competition is not as tough as their non-conference. The problem is that this Penn team is not more athletic than their competition. Their ball movement IS their advantage on offense. While they indeed may have more interesting one-on-one opportunities against Ivies, quick ball movement confuses the defense, makes them scramble, and opens up great shot opportunities. The great assisted baskets really dishearten their opponents. They are giving up the very thing that helped them to big games against good teams.

Not sure why Steve played only 7 guys at Brown, I guess he was prepared to be happy with a split for the weekend. Brown was down 20 to 8 at the 10 minute mark in the first half and up 12 at half time against P'ton with DC scoring 0. The second half, Brown did to P'ton what Penn did to Brown on friday. That's the IL this year.

We gave up 44 points in the second half tonight. We can’t do that and shoot it poorly. When you have guys on the floor giving up more points than they are scoring, that’s bad combination.

Keep talking. It usually turns out well for you guys when you do. You’d think that after what happened only a few weeks ago, Princeton fans would find some humility and just stfu for once but nope, here we are. Karma will be a bitch.
As for the ball movement issue, yes they did force it down the stretch but I think we see less assists because the teams know each other so well. Plus, they had their chances with some nice passing throughout the game and just couldn’t finish. It happens. The fact that it was as close as it was with them shooting as poorly as they did was a good sign.

It's kind of depressing that a team that went 4-0 in the Big Five is struggling to make the Ivy Tournament. There is still plenty of hope, but the room for error is rather small. Let's get a home sweep next weekend. If we don't, that window will narrow a lot more.

Did people really expect us to win that game? I’d say the activity on the game thread was a good indicator of how others approached this game. If we had just split with Princeton would people still be in this mode? Yes it will be tough, but with 6 of 8 at home this is far from over. I also wonder how much the back to back comes into play when comparing performances from the early season. We’ve already determined that familiarity is probably the biggest reason for what we’re seeing.

After shooting 50% from 3 the night before? That is an excellent team we played in their gym and we were right in that thing. If Cornell hadn’t pulled the upset I imagine we would have been in the best spot or at least close. Now it gets harder.

The first 2/3 of this season reminds me of the 2001-02 season. We opened that season with a win at Georgia Tech (as an 11-point underdog) en route to a 6-1 start, with the lone loss being to then #2 Illinois, by 7, in a game in which we were an 18 1/2 point underdog. We would finish the 2001-02 non-conference portion of our schedule with a 13-3 record, including an outright Big 5 championship with a perfect 4-0 city series record. But we started off the Ivy League season 2-3, with losses at Harvard (RPI #174), at home vs. lowly Columbia (RPI #214) and at Yale. We were 3 full games out of first place behind 5-0 Princeton & 6-1 Yale, no longer controlling our own destiny. Harvard was 5-2, in third place. With no Ivy League Tournament, we had to win out and hope that Yale and Princeton would split, just to gain a 3-way tie. We all know how that season played out.
This season, we currently trail first-place Yale by 3 games, and second-place Cornell, Harvard & Princeton by two games each, but have to catch only one of those 4 teams. With 6 of our final 8 games at the Palestra, the odds of doing so should be more favorable than they were in 2002. It all starts this weekend at the Palestra. With a sweep, we're right where we need to be.

We were neck and neck with the Illini in that pre-Thanksgiving tourney in Vegas for a good stretch of the game, too.
In terms of this year, we have better odds due to a 4 team tourney although we've already lost the tiebreaker to Princeton and can only tie Cornell and Yale in head to head at best (we're not catching Yale, at any rate).
The Cornell rematch is a must win for us, period. We must also beat Harvard at least once and if we lose to them this weekend we increase the degree of difficulty on making the IL tourney considerably.
