I was impressed with Penn last night. They have three starting guards who keep applying pressure both offensively and defensively. Washington is a big time talent with good size. Good shooting, hard nosed players off the bench. With Wang back that is a big front court with talent and some experience. They won the Big title 5 with the huge win over defending NCAA champ Villanova.

They really brought it to Brown right from the tap. The Bears seemed taken aback and were not ready for what hit them. Pressure D turned over DeWitt leading to a fast break score. A lazy pass by Dez was picked off by a Penn guard aggressively overplaying the pass and he took it home. Great ball movement created easy inside baskets, plus a 3 or two, and it was about 13 to 3 before the Bears kind of got settled. I have a feeling the weak non-conference schedule has hurt Brown. The game seemed to play faster than they were used to.

All that said, Brown competed well for most of the game. What killed them were the 6 or 7 turnovers that lead right to Penn baskets. The Bears were down 12 to 14 points for much of the game. But a big reason we’re those TO’s. Every time they had some momentum and seemed poised to make a move, they’d lose the ball and Penn would score. Many of those 4 point swings prevented the Bears from cutting the lead under 10 and gaining further momentum.

Obie was great with his inside-outside game working. Took the ball to the hoop strong. Dez got his shot back which was great to see. Choh had another double-double. Hunsicker hit some big 3’s. Brown has a real hard time against teams with size. Penn did what they wanted inside for the most part. Choh competes hard. But ideally he’d be a small forward. The Bears need a couple of bigs that are athletic and can score. Otherwise the talented Bears will continue to be over matched in this very important part of the game.

The Bears were down 20-8 midway through the first half, heading toward another demoralizing home loss when they started playing like the must game that it was. Much like Penn did the night before, Brown started playing very aggressive defense and totally changed the complexion of the game. The Tigers’ 6-9 center Aririguzoh was having his way on the baseline and backing into the lane to score or pass out for threes. But Brown started double teaming him. Dez was very aggressive, often jumping up and down to take away the passing lanes while DeWitt did a better job of keeping him from driving baseline. The Bears over loaded that side of the court, forcing Princeton to pass it around for some corner shots that didn’t fall. Brown also made some steals out of the D which lead to points. The Bears were rolling when Choh faced up his man at the high post and threw a bounce pass between the legs of the defender to a cutting George MK for a layup. Brown outscored the Tigers 35 to 19 on that run to end the half. Dez hit a couple of big 3’s, had 3 blocks, and got key rebounds when Choh was out. Choh had 16-9-6 and played in foul trouble much of the second half. He made some great passes and is becoming a much better FT shooter. Sully hit a big three in the first half to wake up the Bears. George MK is adding another perimeter shooter to the O. He was 5-5 in the first half, and 2-2 from three. He finished with a career high of 19 points. But The Man was Obie. He made some big, timely shots. He controlled the offense at times with calm, steady leadership. A big win the Bears had to have. Next contest is at Cornell, who just beat Harvard in Caimbridge.

Two game stats; Choh - 63 mins, 29 pts, 22 RBs.; Okolie - 71 mins, 43 pts; Cambridge - 41 mins 35 pts, 4 blocks; Mawanda-Kelima -37 mins, 25 pts, 6 Rbs. Hunsaker - 65 mins, 19 pts, 7 assists. Nice scoring ballance. Sullivan and Mitchell (and Fuller, on Sat.) also contributed. I expect we will continue to see more minutes from George M-K. I wonder if he is eligible for POY consideration?
