That obviously did matter; in any case, you did a pretty fine job on Matt Morgan without Bassey on the court. But as I wrote to HSG yesterday, Jimmy Boeheim's a nice front court player for Big Red, and he murdered you tonight!

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, and, oh yeah, turnovers.
Bryce, who was noticeably limping in the second half, kept getting stuck overpenetrating. He had three bad ones almost in a row towards the end of the second half. But everyone was just giving the ball away. (Side note: a few of them were on especially questionable offensive fouls. The refereeing in this game was, I thought, worse than usual).
What really hurt was Cornell's bigs shooting threes. It wasn't just Boeheim. I think they got three other threes from their centers. Would have liked to have seen a few more lineups with Baker at the 5 in response to that, before it got really out of hand. Besides, that would open up some more driving lanes on offense, and it wasn't like Lewis was having a great night. He missed a bunch of close in ones he usually makes in the second half.
Bottom line: we have to protect the ball, and the three point line better. Next weekend is going to be a tough test, the Ps on the road.

What happened to Corey Johnson? Is he hurt? With no Bassey, I would have expected him to get some time.

Tommy certainly has cause.
First and foremost, Kudos the the Lions and the Big Red, each of whom did enough to win.
Even though Harvard's play wasn't stellar against Yale and Brown, it was abysmal this past weekend.
To underscore, look at Assists vs TO's
Yale: 12A v 18TO
Brown: 12 v 16
Columbia: 9 v 18
Cornell: 7 v 24
Columbia played a great game on Friday and Harvard was fortunate to escape with a victory. Cornell played a good second half after trailing by 15. Sure Harvard was exhausted, banged up and short handed, but Amaker is correct in holding the players accountable as Harvard is good enough to have won that game.
No idea whether the walking wounded including Bassey, Juzang, Aiken and/or Johnson will be at full strength next weekend, but I don't think that's going to be Tommy's point of emphasis at practice this week. The Crimson have to play better basketball to be relevant come March.
On a separate point, all of Harvard's bigs were invisible on offense this weekend - even Chris Lewis. Columbia's Tape has developed nicely. He shot 15-17 for the weekend! His height, however, likely ironically cost Columbia Friday night's game as Bryce Aiken was able to jump and still fit underneath (via a double pump) Tape's attempt to block his shot.

That shot by Aiken was amazing. SportsCenter top 10 #1 play. I can't believe he made that.

Certainly Friday night was a special night to be in attendance. Columbia had the game won a few times. I know this is a controversial subject, but I thought both Engles and Earl coached great games.
Bryce is a unique talent, but at times his teammates end up standing around and watching him. Of course, this could be because Bryce isn't looking for them (e.g., 0 assists and 7 TO's vs Cornell). Perhaps missing OOC play together impacted this weekend.
Question: With a 3 point lead, Columbia had fouled Bryce on the preceding two possessions. Hard to tell if Columbia was trying to foul him on the final possession of the first OT. Bryce caught the inbounds on the run and sprinted away from his man before shifting to his left avoiding the fist help defender. Did he avoid being fouled by those two or had Engles decided to back off? Certainly, Tape didn't want to foul Bryce as he was shooting by then. Someone must have asked Engles after the game but I didn't see it.
By the way, that was blood from Bryce's knee soaking through his leggings. Curt Schilling reboot?

My take on Aiken continues to be that he's more of a scorer than a PG. Even Kobe Bryant could make beautiful passes on occasion, and in some games log high assist numbers, but in his soul he always believed it was best if he took the shot. The exception was when he had a formidable scorer like Shaq on the court. Perhaps Towns is the equivalent of Shaq for Aiken.

In case it wasn't clear, Bryce is amazing, has the heart of a lion and Harvard is fortunate to have him. I'm a fan and will enjoy the time we have left with him.
Nevertheless, I think Coach Amaker has issues with the way the team played this weekend. Remember, these guys beat St. Mary's and almost beat SF on the road without Bryce and Chris Lewis. They can and have played better than this if they play differently - healthy or otherwise.

You know, HDG, I just don't get why Freedman doesn't get on the court, at all. Given the need this past weekend for reinforcements, and all the Harvard turnovers, I just can't believe this kid doesn't deserve a minute or two of activity.

On the turnovers, Freedman has the highest turnover percentage on the team in nearly 200 minutes. So he probably isn’t the answer to that question (yet).

Cornell 02-11-19 07:46 PM - Post#275968

A few of us pondered the state of Harvard's guard situation on Saturday night.
Bryce was exhausted and beat up.
Christian was exhausted and left the game early in the second half with a leg injury. He could barely walk after the game.
Corey was injured.
Justin wasn't dressed.
That left Rio Haskett and Noah Kirkwood as the only healthy guards in the regular 10 man rotation, and they are down the depth chart in large part because they are turnover prone at the early stages of their careers.
Coach Earl saw this as well and Cornell pressed for almost the entire second half.
Looking down the bench, Spencer and Tommy McCarthy were the next options, but they haven't played much recently. We concluded that given all the switching that was going on, it was likely that Spencer would be exploited on defense, especially by Matt Morgan or the forwards.
Instead, Bryce and Christian - each of whom were obviously spent - tried to gut it out but the ball movement clearly stopped and the press began to take its toll.

Thanks, HDG; that does make some sense to me, though McCarthy's been around the block, and Spencer was a top recruit. Sorry about that jackass's intrusiveness; can't help himself, and just trying to belong somewhere, I guess.

Yes, and the fact that Cornell plays big probably would have exacerbated the matchup issue. With Warren, Julian, and Boeheim often on the floor together, Harvard would give up a lot of size with shorter guards on the floor more. Needed Kirkwood’s length in that third guard spot without Bassey or Johnson.
