Dartmouth beat Harvard at home. Badly. Dartmouth almost beat Harvard on the road, too---reminder, if you need to intentionally foul someone on Harvard, Bryce Aiken should be avoided.
Dartmouth has also beaten Columbia at home, the night after the Columbia-Harvard epic 3OT game; they are tied with Penn and Brown at 2-4 for 5th in the Ivies.
Dartmouth has more wins this year pre-conference than in the entirety of last year. Their team is #15 nationally in 3-point shooting and big man Chris Knight is much improved.
I don’t think this will be a trap game for Penn as Penn needs to win most every game.

Dartmouth played without starter Adrease Jackson and key reserve Will Emery last weekend. They ended up starting Aryn Rai in Jackson's place and Ian Carter filled in for Emery.
Carter had 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal in 11 minutes against Cornell. Against Columbia, he had 11 points and 3 rebounds in 22 minutes.
Jackson is not in the probable starting lineup.

By the numbers, that is the correct opening line. I think it will come down to around 8.5. I would not lay it, but only because of our FT shooting.

This game is the real state of emergency. If we do not win both games this weekend the likelihood we will not make the big dance goes to 98.6.

I still say they will only lose one more and it won’t be one of these.

Man, do I hope you're right, Steve, but I am not nearly as confident as you are. Every game has the potential for disaster with this team. I really can't think of a single thing we do well consistently. Getting killed on the boards and being unable to defend against Cornell crossed out the two areas I thought we could depend on. After the Brown game many people casually declared us back in control, but the next night we couldn't hit any shots. Hot shooting hides a litany of weaknesses, and we have plenty of them.

I assume everyone stays healthy, of course. That has made all the difference with this crew. Max's return has cured the rebounding issue and I trust the coaches will make sure our guys defend Cornell in the rematch. Other than FTs, the one worry I have is that SD has been slow to adjust when his schemes break down in games. That was really the problem in Ithaca. I do kind of miss the days when Dartmouth Vermouth night was a shot a free cheesesteaks though.

Yeah, but I also remember Dave Faucher bringing the Big Green back out of their locker room to pose for a team photo while lying on the P at center court.

We can beat anyone, but can lose to anyone. The games against Cornell and Brown are instructive--we have the ability to jump out and get to big leads. The key is to keep the foot on the neck when that happens.

That second half against Cornell still has me shaken. It wasn't about poor shooting. It was about being outplayed in the fundamentals of basketball - defense, rebounding, and effort. Inexplicable.
Steve says it was SD's failure to adjust. That's pretty bad, too. I agree Max's return to health is crucial.

We lost that game in the first half, though. We came out playing well enough to put them away after 10 minutes and simply let up on the gas. And couldn't get it back. That cannot happen.

OK, we didn't put them away in the first half, but we lost the second half by 16 and failed at every key possession on both ends of the court.

My feeling is that what we are seeing is just major inconsistency, which comes from a mix of injuries, lack of depth and over-reliance on freshmen. I'm hoping that this will be better next season. The fact that last year's freshman class is (so far) a complete bust is one of the root causes.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
Chuck Daly (not to be confused with my former butcher, Chuck "Steak" Daley) visited me last night and told me that both Michael and Bryce shoot above 50% from 3. Also Jackson Donahue hits his first 2-pointer tonight (actually 2 times) on his way to double digits in scoring. Penn covers the spread.
I'm sorry if that spoils the game for you...
