The women had a stifling defensive weekend, making the highest scoring team in the league look pathetic (sorry, Brown fans) and then dominating Yale for much of the game before having to hold on for a tough win. Camilla Emsbo, one of the leading candidates for ROY, was held to five, and league scoring leader Roxy Barahman was contained at almost six points less than her average. Parker carried the team through the second game with 16 points and 12 boards, and Grasela once again cleanly drove the bus, dishing out 11 assists as opposed to three turnovers (none against Yale.)

One thing that I didn’t notice until recently, due to the slow tempo they play at, is that they have become a very efficient team on offense. Going into the weekend, they were leading the league in points per possession; getting only 54 against Yale means that Harvard has now passed them, but they’re still second, and Parker is second only to Alarie among individuals, just missing the top 50 in the country, with Russell also making the top 10. Needless to say, their points allowed/possession is in a different time zone from the rest of the league, and is 4th in the entire country.

This weekend’s visit to New England will be big for all involved. They haven’t run the women’s odds this week yet on YSA, but before last weekend Penn was already over 2/3 to get the #1 seed; a sweep this weekend would give them a two game lead over everyone in the loss column and a great start in the tiebreakers, so you’ve got to figure that would give them a hammerlock. Meanwhile, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Princeton are all fighting for the last two spots; Dartmouth in particular needs a sweep to maintain a strong hope of making the cut.

Columbia could also be in the mix with a sweep - as then they would have wins over Yale and Harvard and a 4-4 record. But with only 2 homes games remaing, its a tough road.

Dartmouth by virtue of being swept by Harvard, should be rooting for Harvard over Princeton tonight, and the key will be tomorrow’s home game vs. Princeton. With 6 of their 8 remaining games at home, the Big Green have a favoriable schedule.

Home Games remaining:

6 Harvard & Dartmounth
5 Penn
4 Princeton, Yale & Brown
2 Cornell & Columbia

David - Thanks for the update!

I don't expect Penn to have a problem with Dartmouth, but Harvard will be a tough one.

Harvard is a good team each year, but they tend to be a bit inconsistent. They seem to play much better at home, thought. Two years ago, they were 5-2 at home (losses to the Ps) and 3-4 on the road. Last year, they were 7-0 at home and 3-4 on the road. This year, they are 1-0 at home and 3-2 on the road.

Last year's game at Harvard was a tough one. That weekend they beat Penn and Princeton in the next to last weekend of the season. In both games, I seem to remember them being much more physical than their typical 3 point shooting team.

This year's team doesn't have Taylor Rooks inside, which is a huge plus for Penn. They do have 2 strong front court players - Jadyn Bush and Jeannie Boehm, who could give Parker and Aghayere a battle. They also have Rachel Levy coming off the bench and she is certainly a solid reserve.

Benzan, Skinner and Raster can give any team fits. If they are hitting huge from three, it could be a tough night for Penn. If they struggle, then Penn has a much better chance at getting the win.
