Another tough loss.
I congratulate Columbia tennis, fencing, baseball, and archery. But let's get real: Football and Basketball are the marquee college sports in virtually all college and university athletic programs throughout America.
Therefore, Columbia Basketball deserves to be on the same footing as Columbia Football; that is to say, in addition to the Engles dilemma, I believe Pilling, Bollinger, and the Trustees should raze Dodge Fitness Center and replace it with a state-of-the-art facility that would give Columbia Basketball an arena, instead of just a nice little high school gym, in which the players could practice and play their at-home games. All other sports would also have a stellar place in which to practice and compete.
Moreover, a new indoor facility, befitting Columbia's stature as one of the best universities in the world, would provide students and faculty who wish to work out with a brand new facility, instead the antiquated and cramped place it has been for decades.
If Columbia Football deserves the best, so does Columbia Basketball, as well as all the other Columbia sports and students and faculty.
If Columbia can build a Manhattanville campus, why can it not build a new state-of-the-art fitness center either on campus or somewhere in the Manhattanville campus?
Let's be proactive about this.
