It was a topic of conversation Friday night, and Steve Donahue said a few things about it Saturday night:

Most of what Steve said here applied to AJ two years ago. He started and played most of every game. Before Christmas, we assumed that Mike was a no-doubter. Not so, as it was a no-doubter with AJ. I remain optimistic, but the jury will remain out until next year.

Sorry, but I'm still skeptical. Now, if we're still in the hunt when we visit Dartmouth in 12 days, and Michael Wang sits that one out (or plays very sparingly), I might believe it.

It's very common for freshmen who have played a lot of minutes to wear down as the season progresses. College teams play more games than HS, and the games are more taxing due to the pace and physicality. Also, they're in a new place, and dealing with higher academic expectations than they did in HS. I'm not the least bit surprised that Wang seems to have hit the wall.
If the team had more depth this wouldn't be as much of an issue. The complete lack of production from this year's sophomores continues to be a problem.

Skeptical that Wang was benched simply because SD “just felt in particular on the defensive end given Dartmouth’s spacing and three point shooting, I had no one that he could match up with, and on the offensive end, he just wasn’t a big enough advantage."

So SD was lying and just made that up? That hasn’t been his MO.
Who would you have had him guard vs Dartmouth? Chris Knight? A guard? He got dunked on twice @Yale in a half court set and in the first two back to backs played about as bad on Saturday as you can play.
That quote along with the separate corroboration that was posted almost a week later are very consistent with SD’s actions. Wang looked fine against Harvard to me.
We need Mike to play 20-30 minutes and score 12+ pts a night. He doesn’t appear to be mentally ready to do that according to his coach.

As I alluded to in my prior post, I'll reserve judgment until after the March 2nd return meeting in Hanover.

That’s a different game with different facts. Some of the same issues but these things are dynamic not static. For you, the questions I posed are the same. Who you gonna have him guard on Dartmouth?

You could (gasp!) play a zone. And who is going to guard him?

That was precisely the point I made in the game thread. Play the kid, and force the opposition to make an adjustment to try to defend against him.

It will be very different, particularly if Jackson is back. If Dartmouth is playing two bigs, the spacing/matchups will be totally different.

You can’t play zone against Dartmouth for the same spacing/shooting reasons.
That said, can Wang really not cover Aaryn Rai? And if he can’t, is it by so much that he can’t be out there for even a minute? Seems extreme.
That said, it almost worked. We got the Dartmouth win and a better matchup for a rested Wang the next night. I thought we played very well in the second half of the Harvard game, and they just hit a bunch of shots that ranged from super tough to totally lucky in the final 70 seconds and OT.

And for you, my answer still will come after the game on the 2nd, as I suspect that SD will answer the question for me. But if Steve uses the same strategy, then I'll retract my statement and issue my humble public apology.

This is the point of my post — Dartmouth is likely to play two bigs next time, which will potentially change the matchup entirely.

While we did play small most of the time against Dartmouth, AJ and Max were on the court together a bit. Still can’t understand the Michael Wang sit down, especially since it wasn’t Max’ best game on either offense or defense.
Plus - that smallish Dartmouth team seemed to be getting an awful lot of offensive rebounds. The 2nd go around will be interesting to say the least.

Nine of Dartmouth's 27 total rebounds were on the offensive end. It only feels as if they got more.

The only other reason SD would sit Wang inexplicably would be to send him a message. His comments were strong and I’m sure it got to Mike. I agree it was weird he didn’t play at all vs Dartmouth. I suspect it was a combination of bad matchups and a message being sent. That is something SD has done in the past.
I know the biggest difference in Dev Goodman going from role player (and long stretches of DNP-Coaches Decision) and his emergence this year as a 30+ guy is his defense. He always has had the offensive burst and game but his commitment to defense in his first two years was lacking. This year he has become an elite on ball defender and he is on the floor for 30+ minutes. I am pretty sure if Mike worked harder on the defensive end he would be on the floor more often.

True, and Dartmouth seemed to be reacting to our lineups. So Rai was in when Max was, and then when we played 4 guards they did as well. So I presume that Rai would have stayed in to guard Wang. It’s not like we’d have Wang guarding Sistare or something.
